First Year Reading 06

Summer Reading

Your first assignment!

In anticipation of the First-Year Walk, Gettysburg faculty and administrators invite new students to read Lincoln at Gettysburg, by Garry Wills, so you can fully prepare for this tradition.

Although we recommend the entire text, you should focus on the following:

  • Chapter 2: "Gettysburg and the Culture of Death"
  • Chapter 4: "Revolution in Thought"
  • Chapter 5: "Revolution in Style"
  • Appendix 1: "What Lincoln Said: The Text"

Lincoln at Gettysburg CoverGarry Wills, Lincoln at Gettysburg: The Words that Remade America. Touchstone Books, Reprint Edition , 1993. (Hardback edition: Simon and Schuster, 1992)

As a Pulitzer Prize winning book, copies should be available at your local library, or through any retail book seller.
