Keeping Records

Because some citation styles require more information than others (for example, Chicago Manual of Style requires more information than APA) you are advised to write down as much information as possible about each source.

It is also critically important that you KEEP THE CITATION INFORMATION WITH YOUR NOTES so that you know what information came from which source.

For a book, be sure to make note of the following:

• The author / editor's full name(s)
• The full title, including subtitles
• The publisher
• The publisher's location
• The date of publication
• The number of the edition
• Any page numbers from which you quote or directly paraphrase or take a statistic or fact

For an article, be sure to make note of the following:

• The author's full name(s)
• The full title of the article, including subtitles
• The title of the journal
• The date of the issue the article was published in (e.g. November, 2003)
• The volume and issue of the journal
• The page numbers of the article
• Any page numbers from which you quote or directly paraphrase or take a statistic or fact

For a Webpage, be sure to make note of the following:

• The content author / editor's name(s)
• The title of the Web page
• The name of the sponsor for the Web page (for example, this page is part of American University Library's Web site)
• The complete URL / address
• The date you accessed the URL
• The date the content was last updated
