Gettysburg College is proud to join the Presidents’ Alliance for Excellence in Student Learning and Accountability, a group of more than 100 college and university presidents taking the lead in ensuring that college degrees reflect a high level of student achievement.
“Every day we hear more and more about the rising costs of college, and it is appropriate that we be asked to demonstrate the value of a high quality education,” said Gettysburg College President Janet Morgan Riggs ’77. “We must continue to assess student learning and ensure that we are providing students with the tools they need to be successful after graduation as professionals and as responsible citizens. By joining the Presidents’ Alliance, Gettysburg College has reaffirmed its commitment to quality.”
Presidents’ Alliance members are leading their institutions — and the higher education community — in integrating evidence-based improvement of student learning into their institutional culture. Presidents’ Alliance members have established a year-long Action Plan, with specific goals, to significantly improve assessment of, and accountability for, student learning outcomes on their campuses.Members’ improvement goals follow the guidelines set forth in Committing to Quality: Guidelines for Assessment and Accountability in Higher Education, a publication which provides a roadmap for discussing educational quality and taking action to improve it. Committing to Quality asks colleges and universities to set goals for student achievement, gather evidence of performance against those goals, use the evidence to make improvements, and publicly report on their efforts and findings.
The focus on quality will bring together everyone on campus – the president, faculty, academic and student affairs administrators, and students – to demonstrate and improve student learning. This collective effort will help Gettysburg College ensure that its degrees reflect a high level of student achievement and that its students are prepared for work, life and citizenship. The College is proud to demonstrate its commitment by joining the Presidents’ Alliance.
