Religious Studies prof writes op-ed on Syria's chemical weapons for Patriot-News

Stephen Stern, chair of the religious studies department and director of Judaic studies at Gettysburg College, wrote an op-ed on Syrian chemical weapons' threat to Israel and the Middle East for the July 31 edition of the Harrisburg Patriot-News.

Syria's chemical weapons are a threat to Israel, Mideast

As the world’s eyes are on the Olympics, the situation in Syria is escalating and its ramifications go well beyond another story of an “Arab Spring” uprising.

The BBC’s Jim Muir in Damascus recently said government forces seem determined to drive the rebel Free Syrian Army completely out of the capital Damascus and are setting about it quite systematically.

Although this is true, the rebels are far more mobile and faster than the Syrian army. The rebel, or Free Syrian Army, is a collection of defectors from the Syrian army and other groups.
