Kevin Burke '90, the Bullets football team's offensive coordinator, was featured in a July 1 Hanover Evening Sun article about the College's historic location -- and the ways the school's location and focus on history help recruit student-athletes. The article came out on the first day of the 150th anniversary of the BAttle of Gettysburg.
From the Evening Sun:
When Gettysburg College football coach Kevin Burke recruits, he doesn't have much to offer. His school has strong academics but can't provide athletic scholarships because it's a Division III program.
However, he and other Gettysburg College coaches can promote the school's proximity to where the Battle of Gettysburg was fought 150 years ago, from July 1 to July 3. With many similar schools competing for a player, this helps Gettysburg College stand out.
"The number one thing is the name recognition," said Burke, the Bullets' offensive coordinator. "Everybody has heard of Gettysburg. This is one of the few places where you can go to college and you can point out the window and say it happened right out there. It's an amazing experience."
