Gettysburg College will mark Sustainability Week Oct. 20 to 25.

A wide range of activities is planned, from forums to collecting produce left over in farm fields after the harvesting process to a walking tour showcasing sustainability efforts on campus. Such efforts include a student-run "farm" that provides produce to the campus Dining Center.

Numerous student groups are involved, such as Gettysburg Environmental Concerns Organization (GECO) and Campus Kitchen, as well as the College's Center for Public Service (CPS) and other campus organizations.

Monday, Oct.20

Book discussion — Closing the Food Gap: Resetting the Table in the Land of Plenty by Mark Winne, 12-1 p.m., Musselman Library Room 18, register here, brown bag lunch

Adams County Local Foods Network — 6:30 p.m., Glatfelter Lodge, monthly meeting, discuss next steps for this local group in promoting local foods and access, potluck dinner

Green walking tour — 4-4:45 p.m., meet outside College Union Building (CUB), GECO will lead walk, including Painted Turtle Farm, new parking lot, Dining Center, and discussion about increased recycling and the Orange Bike Program, wellness points applicable

Tuesday, Oct. 21

Sustainability Forum: Taking It From Here — 11:45 a.m.-1 p.m., Glatfelter Hall Rooms 302 and 303, students, staff and faculty are welcome to help envision next steps for the campus, lunch will be served

Wednesday, Oct. 22, Campus Sustainability Day

Campus Kitchen — 3:30-6 p.m., prepare and deliver dinner for Circles of Support, register here

Circles of Support — Big View meeting, 7-8:30 p.m., Majestic Theater, Patron's Lounge, second floor, the public is welcome to contribute to a community conversation about systemic food justice and policy changes needed to better support families and individuals living in poverty

Thursday, Oct. 23

Intercultural Resource Center Utah road trip presentation — 11:45 a.m.-1 p.m.,  CUB Junction, students report on two-week trip including reflections on their connection to the environment

GECO and Natural Kitchens Theme House organic dinner — 5:30-7 p.m., CUB Junction

Friday, Oct. 24

Campus Kitchen Coop Shift, 3-5 p.m., process donations of local fresh fruits and vegetables for later distribution, register here

Saturday, Oct. 25

Gleaning Project for Campus Kitchen — 10 a.m.-noon, help gather produce left behind during harvesting process at a local farm

Related events are planned on campus after Sustainability Week:

• A lecture on environmental issues is set for 11:30 a.m. in the CUB Ballroom as part of Gettysburg College's Election 2008 Initiative. The speaker will be U.S. Naval Academy political science Prof. Howard Ernst, author of Chesapeake Bay Blues and senior scholar at the University of Virginia’s Center for Politics.

• Fall Convocation speaker Julian Agyeman will discuss the links between sustainability efforts and environmental justice. The Nov. 13 event is set for 11:30 a.m. in Christ Chapel.Agyeman chairs the Department of Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning at Tufts University.

• Beginning in February, Musselman Library plans Read Green: A Gettysburg Environmental Series, including a visit by Deep Economy author Bill McKibben April 16 at 7:30 p.m. Information will be posted here.
