Student fatality under investigation; district attorney releases information

          RSS            Comments            News@Gettysburg

A Gettysburg College student died Thursday morning, April 9, after an incident at a residence leased by the College for student housing.

"This is a tragedy for the families involved and for our community," said President Janet Morgan Riggs. "I would ask that you please keep the students and families in your thoughts and prayers."

President Riggs issued a message to the community.

Adams County District Attorney Shawn C. Wagner identified the deceased and accused during a press conference Thursday afternoon.

The deceased is Emily Rachel Silverstein, 19, a sophomore from Roosevelt, N.J. Wagner said the victim suffered stab wounds and that there was evidence of strangulation. An autopsy was planned.

Wagner identified the accused as Kevin Schaeffer, 21, a senior from Oley, Pa.

Schaeffer faces preliminary charges including criminal homicide, aggravated assault, tampering with physical evidence, and possessing an instrument of crime, Wagner said.

Schaeffer surrendered without incident and remained in custody of the Gettysburg police, Wagner said. An arraignment was planned for Thursday, Wagner said, after which Schaeffer was to be transferred to the Adams County Adult Correctional Facility. A preliminary hearing to formalize charges is planned within approximately three to 10 days, Wagner said.

The investigation is continuing, Wagner said.

The incident occurred between 4 and 6 a.m. Thursday, Wagner said. Authorities went to 524 Carlisle St., a few blocks north of Lincoln Square, as the result of a 911 call received at 6:45 a.m. The victim was deceased when ambulance personnel arrived, Wagner said. The Adams County Coroner was among authorities at the scene.

Wagner described the incident as a domestic violence-related homicide. He said the victim and accused had previously been in a one-year relationship.

The campus community gathered Thursday at 11:30 a.m. in the Ballroom of the College Union Building (CUB).

College counselors were available Thursday in the CUB Junction. Counselors will remain available in the coming days and after the spring recess, which began Thursday evening.

I cried when I read this. My heart goes out to the family of this student. When we send our precious sons and daughters away to college, we believe they are going to be safe, especially in a beautiful community like that of Gettysburg College. I will keep this family, and the Gettysburg College community, in my prayers.

This tragedy has left me shocked and heartbroken. I don't know what to say, or how to express how I feel about this tragedy that no one would ever think would happen in a community like Gettysburg. Every year we hear about similar tragedies at other colleges across the country, but something like this happening at Gettysburg just always seemed so unfathomable. My husband, Jeremy Ross '05, and I just celebrated our first anniversary last weekend with a trip to Gettysburg. We stocked up on new Gettysburg clothes in the bookstore, visited friends who worked at the College, watched the women's rugby game, and just hung out around campus like old times. As we walked around the campus with our dog, we were struck with that strong sense of "home" that Gettysburg gives us. The last thing on our mind was that in just a few days, a tragedy like this would happen at the College, a place that is home to so many good memories for us, our friends, and our families. If there is one thing Gettysburg College does well, it is creating a community that spans continents and generations. While I face the shock of this tragedy in Charlottesville, VA, I find an odd comfort knowing that Gettysburg alumni and families, past and present, all over the world, are going through this tragedy too. My thoughts and prayers are with all of Gettysburg, and I hope that the current students know that past students like my husband and I are thinking of and praying for them.

My heart goes out to the families involved. As a faculty person, I take very seriously our charge to take care of the students entrusted to our care, and I know that all my colleagues feel the same way--from the ladies and gentlemen in the dining halls to the housekeeping staffs to the administration and other faculty members. Our community feels a tremendous loss on this terrible day.

The Brothers of Sigma Chi offer their deepest condolences in this difficult time: Today Gettysburg College lost a familiar face, a friend, and a committed student. My heart aches at the thought of this tragedy and my prayers and deepest condolences go out to the Victim's family. As a student at Gettysburg College it brings tears to my eyes to hear about the passing of my friend, but nonetheless the support and caring of our community of friends offer what small comfort they can. In this time of sadness I offer a small reminder: Remember, my friends, life is fragile and fleeting; but the love that fills it cannot be broken, nor put to rest. With this in mind I allow my faith to rest in the community I have come to love, and the members that give it strength.

My deepest sympathies go out to the immediate families and to a deeply saddened Gettysburg College community. I just visited this wonderful, and as so many have already pointed out seemingly safe and secure community, this past weekend as a part of the Parent Advisory Committee and as an alumnus. A tragedy like this so rocks our foundation that a place like Gettysburg helps us to learn. I am so sorry for all.

At least 2 families are damaged forever. I have been in tears off and on since I read original e-mail to parents. We all must remember our students may seem adult but are still trying to figure life out. Maybe we never figure it out. Our son is a Sophomore at Gettysburg and is 2500 miles from home, there is not a day that goes by that I don't think of him and his safety. My heart goes out to everyone, this is such an unexpected tragedy. I believe in Gettysburg College and its ability to comprehend this sad and horrid event. Prayers to all involved. I ask that strength be given to the family and friends of the victim and the accused, and that they may all possess the fortitude of spirit to withstand this time of severe trial. I pray that they one day manage to find peace again in their lives. I throw my love to the infinite, and hope that it finds a place the heart of anyone in need during this difficult time. My daughter Liz passed through Gettysburg as a member of the Class of 2007. I have warm and wonderful memories of the town, the campus, the faculty and staff, and especially the students. Every member of the Gettysburg College community, past or present, will find themselves in need of deep reserves of spiritual energy in the days, and months, and years to come. I am saddened today not only for the loss of a young life cut short and for the loss of another lifetime of potential, but also for the loss of memory. One of the places in my life that has until today been a receptacle of shining recollections, has now been cracked and tarnished and cast into the shadows of trepidation. How long now until a visit, or the mere imagining of a visit, to Gettysburg College does not conjure thoughts of Ms. Silverstein and the dark emotional stain of this day's events? One year, five years, twenty years, perhaps a lifetime. I think we have all lost much more than we may yet realize.

My family and I extend our deepest condolences and prayers to the college community.

While this is truly a tragedy, and my thoughts go out to the victim, I am disturbed by the comments that somehow imply Gettysburg would be immune to domestic violence. Unfortunately, DV touches every corner and "safe" community in our world and Gettysburg is no exception. Emily's memory would be better served if we did not treat it as some kind of freak accident (blindly hoping it will never happen again), but rather as a call to action on behalf of the thousands of women who are assaulted each and every day.

One of the things I loved about Gettysburg was that it was a friendly, small-town community. Unfortunately, we live in a world where tragedies happen, but I hope that doesn't change things. It's still a lovely town and a great college. My heart goes out to the family and to the entire college.

What a horrific loss.. Although I did not know Emily, I can't even imagine why something like this would happen to someone who I'm sure was a beautiful bright young woman at Gburg. I am still in tears after reading the news. My thoughts and prayers are with the Silverstein family and friends.

As we gather for Passover and Easter let us remember the messages of these holidays. We were not put here to be slaves to another. The Divine, through an unbearable sacrifice, understands loss and we are still left with unending hope. We are all connected--we are family. When one member of our family is hurt, we are all hurt. When one member of our family is in trouble, we are all in trouble. When one member of our family loses his way, we have all lost our way. And when one member of our family forgets his responsibility to honor life, we are all responsible for reminding him, and each other, the value of honoring every sentient being no matter the circumstances. We are no one without everyone. We send love to the families. With faith in my heart, and an unbearable compassion for life, I hope that we can bring ourselves to pray for the soul of this young man, whose life is forever tainted by his incomprehensibe actions. To our students...nothing we can ever teach you could prepare you for this because it is without reason, without understanding. It is sobering to lose a family member. It is scary. We can help each other by remembering that everyone reacts to loss in a different way. Let's honor all the different ways in which we mourn. Emily...you are missed and forever loved.

I was utterly shocked to hear of such a tragedy in such an amazing place as Gettysburg, and my thoughts go out to the late Miss Silverstein's family & friends. I sincerely hope and pray that we will not soon be forced to deal with another tragedy like this for a long while, and hopefully never again on what are already known as sacred grounds of former battle... Everyone knows that having such a close-knit family as we at Gettysburg do with students, faculty, family & alums, if you hurt one of us, you've pained us all... We are indeed feeling the sting of that pain today, and will not soon forget it. Again, eventhough many of us are hundreds of miles away, our hearts are with you Gettysburg, and Silverstein family. ...Although you do not live on Emily, your memory most certainly forever will in both the hearts and minds of those who knew you, and even those of us who never had the pleasure in doing so. -Rest In Peace

My prayers are with all of you and especially with the family of the deceased. I live nearby and often visit Gettysburg since I love it so. At Gettysburg we are taught the meaning and strength of the word Community. On this page alone we see an enormous outpouring of support from past and present students, parents, faculty, friends, and family. Many posts here are from people who did not know Emily personally and yet that has not deterred them from sending love, prayers and condolences. That is the true meaning of Community and it is what makes Gettysburg unique and wonderful. My thoughts and prayers are with the entire Gettysburg community.

My heart aches for all involved upon reading of the student death on campus yesterday. I am the parent of a prospective Gettysburg student and the safety of our children is a prime concern of mine. Among tho other colleges my child has been considering were UVM (University of Vermont) and Middlebury College. Two years ago at UVM, a female student was killed by a random assailant after she asked to borrow his cell phone. Then last year at Middlebury College, a freshman student from New Mexico disappeared during the winter, his body was found several months later in a nearby river, and it still is not really clear whether his death was an accident or a homicide. So I was thinking I wanted to be sure my child found a safe campus to attend. But here is where I agree with those commenters who point out that this is a "domestic violence" incident, not a "Gettysburg " incident. I have had the misfortune of studying several of these disturbed relational incidents close-up. What we find is that when one person develops too much dependency on emotional gratification from another person, in the same way that one might have dependency on alcohol or drugs, then if that dependency is threatened by perhaps a change or termination of the relationship, they may turn to violence out of desperation. That can happen in many life circumstances, and can take the form of violence, bullying, harrassment to suicide, etc. My point is this. I read so much sadness here about the tarnished memories of gettysburg, but this was not a Gettysburg problem. it was a relational problem. It has ruined 2 live completely, and damaged many others permanently. Life is too fragile and too precious to let this happen. As many hve said here, we need to genuinely care about and support each other. My sympathies go out to all who have been affected.

When tragedy strikes we learn to focus on what is really important in our lives. Far too often we waste time obsessed with material possessions and social status. Instead we should worry about who we are and what we are contributing to lives of the the people we see each and every day. From what my child has told me about Emily, she was a young lady who worried more about others than herself and who brought real joy to the world around her. In my child's words Emily was "genuine." May the loss of her gentle spirit give others the strength to do good work and care for the people in their lives. My heart breaks for Emily's family and those she leaves behind on campus. You are all in my prayers. Many blessings.

Emily was a beautiful, beautiful person and one of the most thoughtful girls I have ever met. When she attended a party I threw several months ago, she came right up to me and thanked me for having her---something that's almost unheard of at a college party. I remember thinking to myself, "This girl is incredibly thoughtful," and I think this one act represents who Emily truly was. I am in complete shock that this horrific event happened, and as a friend of both parties, my mind is still reeling that something like this could have ever happened to these two people. I don't think anyone could have ever saw it coming. My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved--friends and family of both parties--and I hope that as a community, we will all continue to uphold the utmost respect and love for those affected. Bless you, Emily.

I met Emily back in 7th grade when she first came to our middle school. We played in the high school band and had classes together. I sat next to her, talked with her, and laughed with her countless times. I have always known Emily as the kindest, sweetest person. She brightened up our lives with her smile and sunny disposition. She had ambitions of changing the world for the better. She advocated peace, love, and taking care of our earth. I had so looked forward to witnessing the difference she would make in our society. I never expected her time here to be cut so short, so suddenly. My heart goes out to the Silverstein family. I love you all. You have so many friends to support you in this trying time. When I heard the news this morning I was so heart broken. The first thing that came to my mind was that it was a joke. Gettysburg? No, not there. Not a place where you can leave your cell phone to hold your seat at Servo or your laptop to save your work area at the library over night and everything will still be there. I hate to ever think something like this would happen at such a safe and secure college. I loved my years there and feel so affected as if I still attended. I was so sorry to hear of the death of this young woman. This is every parent's worse nightmare. As a parent of a freshman female, I continually worry that she is making the right choices and keeping herself safe. I have to wonder if there were any signs along the way that others may have seen that could have prevented this tragedy. Hopefully the loss of Emily's life will make others look around them at their friends and the relationships they have. While this happened at Gettysburg College, it also happens in our society every day. We need to educate our young adults about the dangers of abusive relationships and how to protect themselves, as well as how to intervene when necessary. I grieve for Emily's family as well as Kevin's family. A tragedy for all.

We are saddend to hear of this tragedy at the college. She had so much going for her and so much love for children and people in general, and her father stated her talent for art. This is a loss. My heart goes out to her family dearly. May God bless you and keep you strong.

Such a tragedy, I never thought that during my four years of college that something like this could happen so close to home. My thoughts and prayers go out to Emily and her family. RIP Emily.

It's hard to know what to say in a time like this... but I hope that Emily's family and friends know that our entire community is grieving for her. I only hope that some good can come out of this senseless tragedy. Though our Gettysburg "bubble" has been burst, I know that we will continue to come together to get through this trying time. Rest in peace, Emily.

As others have said, it was shocking to hear about this tragic event. Gettysburg has taught us all the true meaning of community, as is evidenced by these posts. May love and hope surround everyone affected and the entire Gettysburg College community during this difficult time.

Our hearts go out to Emily's family, friends and to the Gettysburg College community. A young lady of conscience who has brightened the lives of so many by considering the needs of others truly represents the ideals and aspirations of Gettysburg College.

It is very uplifting and encouraging to read all these outpourings of sympathy. As a resident of Emily's hometown here in Roosevelt N.J. and a long-time friend of the family, I want to assure you that these comments are read and appreciated! I firmly believe that Em was an "old soul," that is, one who was far wiser than her age indicated. Although Em embraced non-violence, she was a fierce warrior in the fight against injustice. But even old souls need nurturing and that is where we need to thank Linda, Bob, and Jamie for the gift they gave the world in their beautiful daughter/sister. They can't control what the world does with that gift, they can only give the gift and these 3 gentle souls gave this gift beautifully. Their grief is unfathomable and their only reward is the knowledge that they helped intimately shape this vibrant flame that was Emily Rachael Silverstein. If everyone would commit just one act of compassion that they otherwise wouldn't have undertaken, it would be the surest way I know of to keep that flame alive.

To Emily's family - As the mother of two college aged children (one son at G-burg) and a third yet to leave for college in the Fall, I am devastated for you and all those who love Emily. Every day, we worry constantly about their well-being and whether we've taught them the right things. I feel so unworthy almost as a parent, reading of your wonderful daughter, Emily. My goodness, what a fantastic job you have done of raising up such a fine young lady. Somehow, some way, some day, I pray that you will bask in the glory of who she was and not let go of your ideals because of this inhuman injustice. I pray that you will find peace knowing that she is not in pain now but happily watching over you, praying for all to continue her missions for peace. I pray for your suffering to ease someday. There are just no words. Know that many in the world will never ever forget your wonderful child, and are praying for you. May your baby forever rest in peace. And to Gettysburg - you will continue to be a wonderful college and your words and care for the family and the students will not go unappreciated.

When I woke up and saw this on the news, I was devastated. I saw her around town sometimes and just knowing how brutally she was murdered ate my heart and it still is today 3 days later. I can't get over this. She was such a nice girl, so innocent. Why would anyone do something like this to anyone? Wow. R.I.P. I just can't believe this happend. We don't usually have this kind of stuff in Gettysburg, and I hope we dont start getting it either. I wish all my condolences to the family. This was a horrific tradgedy for a beautiful young girl. At least she's in a better safer place where she can be who she always wanted to be and become. R.I.P Emily Rachel Silverstein. Even though i didn't know you personally, you're always a friend to me. And to the family, you're in my prayers. God bless you.

On behalf of all of the members of the Lebanon Valley College Community, let me express my sadness at this terrible tragedy and extend my sympathies to all the members of the Gettysburg College community.

I am deeply saddened and disturbed that such a horrific tradegy could occur on our beloved campus. My thoughts and prayers go out to the families involved, as well as to the entire college community.

Since the morning of April 9, I have been trying to make sense of what has happened here. I've been following the local media and watching the poignant and touching postings on the Gettysburg condolence site -- I didn't know Emily personally, but I'm a G-burg alum who now lives just a couple of miles up the road from where this horrific tragedy took place. Even with most students away for the holiday break, we have watched the makeshift shrine to Emily growing in front of Peace House, her on-campus residence, throughout the four-day weekend. As the majority of the campus community returns to our grieving town tomorrow, I pray that they can take comfort in each other, provide support through love and prayers to the family and friends who are undoubtedly devastated, and never forget the common thread that is clearly woven through these postings. Make compassion, empathy and "others before self" a part of your life, and this will be your personal tribute to Emily. I never knew her, and yet I will never forget her. Rest in peace, dear girl.

Dear Linda, It was just the other day that you showed me the picture of your lovely daughter. The obvious love and adoration you feel for Emily warmed my heart. I know I can speak for all of your co-workers at Cranbury Center and say that we are all devastated by your tragic loss. I never met Emily, but with you as her mother I know she is an exceptional person whose presence on this earth will surely be missed. My thoughts and prayers, and those of your friends at Cranbury are with you.

So sorry to hear of this tragedy. Kind thoughts and wishes to the families most affected and for the healing of the community.

As parents of a junior daughter, our thoughts and prayers are with the Silverstein and Schaeffer families. We wish you peace, strength and energy in the days ahead. We hope many of you were able to share time with your families and friends over the holiday weekend and that upon returning to Gettysburg, you continue to feel the comfort and community that is the essence of Gettyburg College.

I was shocked, heartbroken and deeply disturbed when I heard of this tragedy. Gettysburg was my home for four years, and never a place where danger was something I ever felt. Emily's life was taken away from her in an apartment where many great memories for a lot of people probably happened...and now we will remember the memory of a beautiful life another decided was his to take. It is not fair...I am sorry for this family, and my heart goes out to you. Gettysburg is a wonderful place, and I know this school is coming together more than ever right now...there is simply no other way they would do things.

My heart and prayers go out to the Silverstein Family. I am so sorry for your loss.

I am blessed to be a part of the Gettysburg College community and feel lucky to have the opportunity to teach here. My heart is aching for all the families affected by this tragedy, and that includes the many sons and daughters who attend this college and those who are employed here, for we are a family too. Reach out to one another in sorrow and support each other with grace.

Linda Fiscus | Posted Apr 12, 2009 08:51 PM

With deepest sympathy and sincere prayers... ...that this dear, sweet girl may rest in peace. ...that her family and friends may mourn and begin to heal. ...that the entire Gettysburg community can endure this tragedy with continued grace and professionalism. ...that the accused is repentant. ...that this be the last horror to descend upon our serene campus. ...that we diligently work to heighten the awareness and prevention of domestic violence.

When word of this event first reached me in England I was shocked. Now, days later, I can say that this feeling has not subsided. I lived and studied in Gettysburg for many years and it saddens me to think that a community so devastated by death and strife through the contest of the American Civil War has yet to endure further heartache. My sympathy and the sympathy of my fellow postgraduates at Oxford University goes out to the families torn asunder by this tragedy and to the entire community of Gettysburg College. My heart is so heavy with sorrow.

It's hard to believe such a terrible thing could ever happen on our campus! My thoughts and prayers are with the Gettysburg community!

My deepest sympathies go out to both the Gettysburg community and the family and friends of Emily. The loss of such a promising life is so incredibly sad.

My heart and prayers go out to the affected families during their time of grief. As a sophomore at Gettysburg College it is difficult to swallow the shocking events that have taken place on April 9,2009; yet I have trust that as a community we will grow stronger together in memory of Emily. We will miss you Emily!
