Dining Services Making a Difference in 2009
Recyclable cups, local produce and reusable mug discounts are just a few of the ways the Dining Services are working towards creating a more sustainable dining experience at Gettysburg College.
Sustainability through “Green” Dining
Reduce!
- Transportation, by using local produce. Their aim is to get as much as they can from the campus garden, (also known as the "Painted Turtle Farm") and then any additional produce from within 100 miles of the college.
- Waste, by using the Waste Pro Pulper System which has cut down waste from the kitchen and dish room by 80%.
- Has reduced the amount of waste that is sent to the local land fill by 60%
Recycle!
- 100% recyclable paper for all their napkins and paper products
- Diligently recycle all glass, metal, plastic and cardboard
Reuse!
- Used cooking oil from the kitchen is made into bio diesel fuel
- Discount at Bullet Hole and The Commons when using a mug or Nalgine instead of a paper product
- Uses 95% of their water in cleaning operations
Dining Services is continuously making improvements to systems and processes. Gary Brautigam, the Director of Dining Services, speaks about their main focus this year, "Gettysburg College Dining Services is committed to using locally grown and processed foods whenever possible considering quality, availability and costs." This year Dining Services has purchased nearly $400,000 in locally grown and processed foods and hopes to raise this number in the coming years.
