Leadership on the softball field means more than swinging bats

Sarah Woodbury, Class of 2010, contributed much on the softball fields as a player during her time at Gettysburg College, but it was her leadership among her teammates that truly impressed her coach.

"The role of captain is to be a liaison between the coaches and the players, making sure that everyone is on the same page. Sarah did that well," Head Softball Coach Samantha Abrams said.

Woodbury often met with her teammates before or after practices to talk with them, listen to their stories, or remind them of important milestones ahead. Each player has individual goals, as well as team goals during the season, and she was there to help out or push the team when necessary.

On the field, Woodbury started all 38 games this past spring and was named to the All-Centennial Conference Second Team after finishing with a .292 batting average, 21 runs, five doubles, and 25 RBI. She ended her career 11th on Gettysburg's all-time RBI list.

Woodbury was also selected to the ESPN: The Magazine College Division Academic All-District II Second Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

A health science major from Audubon, Pa., Woodbury served as the executive director of the College's "St. Jude Up ‘til Dawn" fundraising initiative and was co-president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
