A Gettysburg College student spent his winter break campaigning for Republican presidential candidate and Gettysburg alumnus Ron Paul '57 in advance of the New Hampshire primary.

Cody Segraves ’14 traveled from Washington, D.C. to Loudon, N.H. and spent nine days volunteering for the Youth for Ron Paul effort, “New Year’s with Ron Paul.” From Jan. 2-11, Segraves joined youth from around the nation and helped the Ron Paul presidential campaign effort by knocking on doors, calling likely voters, and helping with campaign-related events and special projects.

He learned about the opportunity through his membership in Gettysburg College’s “Youth for Paul” organization. “I, along with two other students, organized the chapter at Gettysburg,” said Segraves, who serves as Vice-Chairman of the group. “I’ve been a supporter of Dr. Paul since 2007, and really wanted to work on his campaign. When I received an email suggesting I apply for ‘New Year’s with Ron Paul,’ I submitted my information and was accepted.”

“My favorite part of the experience was making the phone calls,” he said. “I had a lot of interesting, engaging conversations about everything from foreign policy to 10th Amendment rights.” While he didn’t personally meet Ron Paul ’57, Segraves was a member of an intimate audience that Paul spoke to. And he did meet members of Paul’s family, high-ranking campaign team members, and New Hampshire State Senators Andy Sanborn and Jim Forsythe.

“Being a part of Ron Paul’s presidential campaign team was awesome,” said Segraves. “It was hard work and long hours, but was well worth it. The people I met and worked with were fantastic and I would gladly do it again.”

Segraves is a Chinese Studies major and interned for U.S. Rep. Todd Platts (R-Pa) during the fall 2011 semester.

Founded in 1832, Gettysburg College is a highly selective four-year residential college of liberal arts and sciences with a strong academic tradition. Alumni include Rhodes Scholars, a Nobel laureate, and other distinguished scholars. The college enrolls 2,600 undergraduate students and is located on a 200-acre campus adjacent to the Gettysburg National Military Park in Pennsylvania.
