Gettysburg College is one of the best colleges in the nation to work for, according to a new survey by The Chronicle of Higher Education.
The results, released Aug. 5 in The Chronicle’s fifth annual report on The Academic Workplace, are based on a survey of more than 46,000 employees at 294 colleges and universities.
Gettysburg College was one of only 103 institutions that achieved “Great College to Work For” recognition for specific best practices and policies. Results are reported for small, medium, and large institutions, with Gettysburg included among institutions with 2,999 or fewer students.
Gettysburg College won honors in ten categories this year:
Collaborative governance
Professional/career development programs
Teaching environment
Compensation and benefits
Facilities, workspaces and security
Job satisfaction
Work/life balance
Confidence in senior leadership
Supervisor/department chair relationship
Tenure clarity and process
"I’m very proud that Gettysburg College has once again been honored for being a great workplace. Our faculty and staff are able to provide a stronger educational experience for our students when they find the work environment to be supportive and conducive to excellence," said President Janet Morgan Riggs '77.
“The institutions that the Great Colleges program recognizes provide innovative educational experiences – while also offering their employees outstanding workplace experiences – and we are eager to help readers learn more about them,” said Liz McMillen, The Chronicle’s editor.
The survey results are based on a two-part assessment process: an institutional audit that captured demographics and workplace policies from each institution, and a survey administered to faculty, administrators, and professional support staff. The primary factor in deciding whether an institution received recognition was the employee feedback.
To administer the survey and analyze the results, The Chronicle worked with ModernThink LLC, a strategic human capital consulting firm that has conducted numerous “Best Places to Work” programs, surveying hundreds of thousands of employees nationwide.
Great Colleges to Work For is one of the largest and most respected workplace-recognition programs in the country. Gettysburg has also been named one of the "Best Places to Work in PA" for nine consecutive years.
Founded in 1832, Gettysburg College is a highly selective four-year residential college of liberal arts and sciences with astrong academic tradition. Alumni include Rhodes Scholars, a Nobel laureate, and other distinguished scholars. The college enrolls 2,600 undergraduate students and is located on a 200-acre campus adjacent to the Gettysburg National Military Park in Pennsylvania.
