Richard Russell

Assistant Professor of Psychology

Russell earned a doctorate in cognitive science from MIT and bachelor's in neuroscience from Pomona College. In between he worked as a research assistant doing functional neuroimaging at the University of Cambridge, and later received an NIH Kirschstein-NRSA postdoctoral fellowship to work in the Vision Sciences lab at Harvard University.

Recent Work:

Russell is interested in how we perceive information about other people from their face (i.e. identity, age, and sex). He identified a population new to science, face 'Super-Recognizers', also identified sex and age differences in facial pigmentation, and created the 'Illusion of Sex' to demonstrate the importance of these differences for face perception. He also put forward an empirically-based account of why cosmetics are worn the way they are.
