Welcome to the first edition of the Center for Public Service alumni e-newsletter!
We hope to keep you informed of news at CPS, connect alumni with each other and link current students with CPS alumni.

On Friday, January 18, 2008, 5:15-7pm, we invite you to join current CPS student program coordinators at the Eisenhower Institute (915 15th Street, NW, 8th floor, Washington, DC).  During our time together, we will provide an update of the work of the Center for Public Service, allow our current students to hear from you what you are doing (including how you continue to apply what you learned through your experience with CPS) and engage in a conversation about the connections between public policy and direct community action.

Light hors d'oeuvres will be provided.
Please RSVP to 717.337.6490 or to Gretchen at gnatter@gettysburg.edu by January 11.

Looking forward to seeing you there!

Made possible by a generous gift from James Heston '70, Communities in Action / Comunidades en Acción initiatiated a new, unique opportunity for summer internships. It aims to further Gettysburg College's vision for active engagement in local and global contexts by providing a summer experience to eleven students. Through immersion in Adams County, PA, and the area around Ciudad Sandino, Nicaragua, students had an extraordinary opportunity to engage in the work of community action. They focused on daily community development, sharpening their understanding of the complexity of social issues. Whether students were working at a summer program for migrant children in Adams County or training youth to become peer health educators in Ciudad Sandino, Communities in Action / Comunidades en Acción provided students with an opportunity to develop strong friendships and learn what its like to tackle some of the world's most challenging problems. Beginning this fall, dozens of Gettysburg College students have begun donning aprons and hairnets several times a week to create healthy and nutritious meals for members of the Adams County community.

The Campus Kitchen at Gettysburg College offically opened its doors on November 15, 2007! The program is operated by student volunteers and they reuse donated food from the college's dining hall and restaurants and grocery stores to make healthy meals. Students prepare the meals, deliver them to the community and learn about non-profit management and leadership throughout the entire process. At full capacity, the program will distribute more than 150 meals a week to those in need. The kitchen is located near campus in the South Central Community Action Program (SCCAP) building on North Stratton Street.

Louisa Polos, cuurent Co-Program Coordinator for the project explains: "Students will have the opportunity to cook meals and manage the project while working to break down barriers and build bridges as we will deliver meals personally to the elderly, single-parent families and people living in poverty, or to local social service agencies such as Circles of Support, Adams County Office of Aging." JENNIFER BARON '07

What program did you work with at CPS?
I was an Immersion Project Coordinator.

What are you doing in life after Gettysburg?
AmeriCorps*VISTA for North Carolina Campus Compact at Wake Forest University, I serve as the Campus Kitchen Coordinator and a staff member of the Student Development and Volunteer Services Office. The Campus Kitchen at Wake Forest is an anti- hunger-program that helps fight poverty by using resources that are already available. We work with 9 different partner agencies and serve about 1400 meals a month.  Additionally, we serve our partners in the community by providing nutrition education and bringing empowerment- based programming. Our most successful program this semester was a highly interactive 13-week nutrition program for a children's center called "Nutrition through the Arts." My focus as a VISTA is to make our program sustainable, so I work closely with a dedicated group of student leaders who are trained to certify and operate the kitchen. We have also traveled across the state to help promote Campus Kitchen at other colleges and universities, and have had many opportunities to gain administrative support on campus through public speaking events and advisory board meetings.

There are many moments in my work-day when I'm inclined to laugh at this unexpected use of my BA, but I'm usually able to control the impulse. The fact is that the people I work with are wonderful and I'm able to use Spanish and writing on a daily basis. It's absurd to spend more than half a day bossing a foreman around about what he can and cannot fit into a class session, but it's also a lot of fun."
