Merciful Meekness: Becoming a Spiritually Integrated Person by Kerry Walters

"Merciful Meekness" is an examination of the bedrock Christian moral principles of mercy and meekness that leads the author, Gettysburg College philosophy professor Kerry Walters, to affirm their essential integration if one is to become a complete Christian.

Walters redefines and synthesizes the Christian principles of mercy and meekness as essential to the union with Christ, countering the Nietzschean philosophy that rejects their synthesis (one or the other is possible, but not both) as incompatible, inherently contradictory, and "morally repugnant." Intended as a reference work for undergraduate students, the book is rooted in scripture and Christian tradition, the thought of Thomas Merton, Henri Nouwen, Ayn Rand, and Friedrich Nietzsche. It is also helpful for the general reader in search of spiritual wholeness, and it is a counter-guide to Christianity's naysayer.

Walters is the William Bittinger Professor of Philosophy and Edwin T. and Cynthia Shearer Johnson Distinguished Teaching Professor in the Humanities at Gettysburg College. His many books include Paulist Press's Spirituality of the Handmaid, Soul Wilderness, Godlust, and Growing God.
