Libby Larsen's "Crowding North"

American composer Libby Larsen was commissioned to compose a world premiere piece in celebration of Gettysburg College’s 175th anniversary last year. Serving as composer-in-residence at Gettysburg, Larsen met and visited with students in the College’s Sunderman Conservatory of Music, held public lectures and performances, and worked with the faculty.

To tie the composition to Gettysburg College, Larsen used excerpts of poetry from English professor Deborah Larsen Cowan’s book, Stitching Porcelain. She also worked with Conservatory students and faculty to perform, direct, and title the finished composition – Crowding North. The world premiere piece was performed by members of the Gettysburg College-Community Orchestra and Gettysburg College Choir  April 28 and 29, 2007, at the Majestic Theater in downtown Gettysburg.
