International Students

Gettysburg College embraces diversity and has a strong commitment to our international students.  We do provide financial assistance to our international students; however, the financial aid process is highly competitive and limited.

International students who are applying for financial aid should submit the International Student Financial Aid Application and the Certification of Finances Form.

Gettysburg College awards financial aid based on financial need.  Once need is determined, academic achievement, scholastic aptitude, and promise of contribution as a student and citizen are factors used to determine financial aid awards.

International students have the potential to receive a grant amount equal to full tuition but that is not ordinarily the case. Awards of loan and employment are usually part of a financial aid package.  There is also an expectation that families will contribute to the student's educational costs.

Applicants will receive a financial aid decision with their admissions acceptance letter if the financial aid paperwork is on file at the College. Otherwise the financial aid decision will be made as soon as possible after the materials are received by the College.

Financial aid decisions for continuing students will be mailed after June 1.

Frequently Asked Questions from International Students

•1)      What expenses are included in "educational costs"?

The term, "educational costs," usually refers to tuition, telecommunication fee, student activities fee, room, board and books.  Students will need addition funds for personal expenses including the health insurance fee (unless you are covered under a family health insurance policy).  Please keep this information in mind as you are completing the financial aid application.

•2)      Who gets financial aid?

Most financial aid is awarded to families with demonstrated financial need. Aid amounts are linked to a family's financial situation, and aid may be in the form of grants, loans, or employment.

•3)      If the financial aid award includes College Work-Study (campus employment), how do I find a job?

The Work Study Journal, a list of jobs, will be available for review after August 15.  The International Student Advisor, Victor Arcelus, will assist new students in finding a job after they arrive on campus.

International students can only work on campus during the academic year. When classes are in session students can work a maximum of 20 hours a week and during break periods students can work a maximum of 40 hours a week. All students who plan to work must apply for a social security number. This application process is coordinated through the International Student Advisor.

International students at Gettysburg College can work off campus during the summer break and after graduation. Employment off campus during the summer is authorized as Curricular Practical Training (CPT) and employment off campus after graduation is authorized as Optional Practical Training (OPT). Off-campus employment is coordinated through the International Student Advisor.
