Presidential Search

Presidential Firm Named - July 3, 2018

Dear Gettysburg College community,

I hope your summer is off to a great start! As promised, this communication provides an update on the search for the 15th President of Gettysburg College.

The Presidential Search Committee (PSC) held its first two meetings in June. Our main objectives were to 1) select a search firm with which to partner and 2) establish the working relationship with the selected firm. Nine firms were invited to submit proposals. Of the nine, four firms were selected as finalists and made in-person presentations to the PSC. After careful deliberation, the PSC retained Russell Reynolds Associates to assist with our search.

Russell Reynolds Associates is a global search and leadership advisory firm with more than 400 consultants in 46 offices working with nonprofit and for-profit organizations across all industries and regions. Anne Coyle and Jett Pihakis are the Russell Reynolds principals who will work directly on the Gettysburg College presidential search. Anne and Jett are members of the firm’s Higher Education Practice and have conducted more than 20 presidential searches for colleges and universities across the country and many other academic searches for provosts, deans, and vice presidents.

Anne and Jett work with search committees to develop robust and diverse candidate pools. Presidential searches recently completed include the University of Delaware, Fairfield University, and Carnegie Mellon University. With the help of Russell Reynolds, the PSC plans to conduct a rigorous and thorough search that will last several months.

As indicated in an earlier communication, our community’s involvement in helping to shape what Gettysburg College needs in its next president is vital. Partnering with Russell Reynolds, the PSC is entering the “listening phase” which will include large and small group meetings – both face-to-face and telephonically – both on-campus and within the broader College community. An online survey will insure that everyone has the opportunity to provide input to the search.

On-campus meetings will begin on August 20 and 21, during which Russell Reynolds and, in some instances, members of the PSC, will meet with faculty members, administrators, staff, and students. Although these meetings fall before the official start of the academic year, we hope that many of you will have the opportunity to attend. Finally, to accommodate student schedules, I will host meetings on September 6 with student groups to collect their thoughts on Gettysburg’s next president.

The findings from these on-campus meetings, the online survey, as well as additional meetings with College Trustees and College advisory boards over the summer and into the early part of the academic year will help the PSC and Russell Reynolds to refine the characteristics and qualities that we seek in our new leader.

More information about these sessions and the survey will be shared in the coming weeks.

Once the position profile is finalized, the search committee will solicit nominations from the Gettysburg community and will work with our search consultants to proactively recruit a robust and diverse candidate pool. The committee will interview and conduct extensive due diligence over the winter, with the goal of recommending one candidate for Board of Trustee approval in Spring 2019.

Thank you in advance for your active participation during the “listening phase.” A foundation of strong input from our College community will provide outstanding guidance to the PSC as we conduct the search. As a reminder, members of the community can find more information about the search at www.gettysburg.edu/search and may ask questions and comment about the search by emailing presidentialsearch@gettysburg.edu. Nominations, inquiries, and expressions of interest in the position should be directed to Russell Reynolds at gettysburg@russellreynolds.com.

Sincerely,
