The Professional Photographers
William H. Tipton, 1850-1929Tipton was born in Gettysburg and apprenticed under Charles and Issac Tyson, who were among the earliest Gettysburg photographers...amateur or professional. Tipton purchased their studio in 1868.
Tipton, who advertised as "The Battlefield Photographer," produced thousands of photographs of Gettysburg tourists and returning veterans as well as many images of Gettysburg College facilities and students.
Levi Mumper 1843-1916
Mumper was born in York County. He also learned his trade from the Tyson brothers, and from about 1865 to about 1906 was also engaged in commercial photography in Gettysburg. Many 'Senior Pictures' of late 19th Century Gettysburg College Students were taken by Levi Mumper.
Walter Lane 1913-1995
A former "Life" magazine photographer and widely admired Gettysburg civic and business leader. Lane established a studio in Gettysburg in 1947 on York street and over the succeeding 38 years took many thousand photographs for Gettysburg College students and faculty.
E. White
White Studios of New York City was the "official photographer to the '1931 Spectrum'" and advertised as "completely equipped to render the highest quality craftsmanship and an expedited service on both personal portraiture and photography for college annuals."
Samuel W. Kuhnert
Mr. Kuhnert of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania was one of earliest photographers to make use of aerial photography in central Pennsylvania.
The Amateur Photographers
Dr. Charles A. SloatProfessor Emeritus of Gettysburg College and a member of the class of 1923. Dr. Sloat was a talented amateur photographer and taught photographic process as part of his courses in Chemistry (1927-1968). Dr. Sloat produced from the original glass plate negative the view of the top and rear of Pennsylvania Hall.
Professor Frank H. Kramer 1886-1963
Graduating from Gettysburg College in 1914, Mr. Kramer return to the college as member of the education faculty 1921-1956.
Frederick C. Sternat 1881-1956
Mr. Sternat was a member of the Class of 1904.
