Subject Areas - World War I Sources in Special Collections

Books, pamphlets, and other published materials:
All of our published material is cataloged into MUSCAT. Our stacks are closed so you must request our books at the reference desk in our Reading Room. In most cases, our copies are rare and/or first editions, cannot be photocopied and do not circulate, so check MUSCAT to see if there is a second copy in the main stacks that circulates.

For non-published materials such as photographs, ephemera, and manuscripts, you will need to contact the staff of Special Collections. The following list of primary sources below is not exhaustive as we add materials and process collections year round. With a few exceptions, reproductions and photocopies in our collections are not listed.

College Archives:
Records during the time period would include: The Papers of the Office of the President of Gettysburg College: William Anthony Granville (1910-1923); Minutes of the Board of Trustee Meetings; Minutes of the Faculty Meetings; pamphlets, reports, and photography files; fraternity records; and College and student publications of the time period (e.g., Class of 1904 Bulletin, 1904-1964, Gettysburg Alumni Bulletin, 1930-present, Mercury, 1894-present, Spectrum, 1892-present, Women's League Conventions, 1911-1988). Ask the Special Collections staff for assistance.

Kramer, Frank H., Class of 1914. Contains letters to Kramer from college friends in the military, 1916-1919, and photo album. MS-004.

Locke, W. L. Letter to Miss Thompson from Camp Colt, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. ALS-3 pp. VFM-222.

Lybarger, Donald F., Class of 1919. Contains letters written from Gettysburg College students stationed in stateside military training camps between 1917 and 1919 and addressed to Lybarger or "Brothers of Phi Sigma." A scrapbook kept by Lybarger while a student at Gettysburg between 1914-1919 includes photographs, programs, dance cards and other college memorabilia. MS-019.

Miller, Captain Russell. Correspondence, June 1916 - May 1919 between Miller and his fiancée, and later wife, Claudia. MS-082

Parkin, Major Harry D. Memoirs of World War I. Five Volumes, Bound. "Being an account of the experiences of an American officer wounded and captured by the Germans." Parkin was the commander of the First Battalion, 316th Infantry, 79th Division of the American Expeditionary Forces. MS- 663pp. Miscellaneous Volumes, #394-398.

Taylor, Amos E., Class of 1915. Series II: Military Service. Contains typed copies of daybooks/diaries Taylor kept during his military service between 1917 and 1919. There are a large number of purchased photographs of different towns and battle scenes in France, German propaganda photos, and a number of personal photographs of soldiers, camp life and other scenes in France. Toomey, Leo. Correspondence, September 1917 - May 1918 between Toomey, his mother and sister, and, correspondence, January 1916 - April 1927 to Toomey from various sources. Collection also includes photographs, documents and other ephemera and a home-made kit bag. MS-032.

WWI Gettysburg College Student Records-War Service Questionnaires issued to all male students at Gettysburg in April of 1919 to collect war service data. Also included in this file are war service questionnaires issued by the Pennsylvania Beta Chapter of Phi Delta Theta to all Gettysburg College members. MS-048.

Wright, John. Letters written to Wright (when editor of Knoxville Journal, Knoxville, Iowa) and to family members, from area residents serving in the armed forces. Unprocessed.
