Subject Areas - Women's Studies Sources in Special Collections

Books, pamphlets, and other published materials:
Check MUSCAT for Special Collections' holdings. Our stacks are closed so you must make your requests at the reference desk in our Reading Room. In most cases, our copies are rare and/or first edition, but there may be a second copy in the main stacks that can circulate.

For non-published materials, including photographs, maps, ephemera, and manuscripts, consult the archivists.

College Archives:
Many of the College Publications archived in Special Collections will be extremely beneficial to the researcher, including the Woman's League Convention Proceedings (1911-1995) and the Women's Studies Newsletter, published by the Women's Studies Department of Gettysburg College (1995-present).

Other college publications that discuss women at Gettysburg or Gettysburg College alumnae include: Gettysburg, the alumni magazine, 1930-present; the Alumni Directory and Alumni Record of Gettysburg College, 1832-1932; deceased faculty and alumni files; the Faculty Meeting Minutes of Gettysburg College; athletic reports and media guides, 1931-present; the Student Handbook/G-Book; the Gettysburgian (student newspaper); as well as the Spectrum (yearbook).

In addition, researchers should consult the inventories of the Record Groups of President's Papers for pertinent materials regarding women at Gettysburg (Pennsylvania) College. The Papers of Henry W.A. Hanson, C.A. Hanson, and Charles Glassick all contain subject files about women and their organizations.

Subject Vertical Files:
Special Collections maintains subject files on noteworthy people, places, events, and things. Researchers may want to read the files entitled "Dean of Women (of Gettysburg College)," "Sexual Harassment," "Status of Women at Gettysburg College," "Title IX (athletics)," "Women's General League," "Women's Chorus," "Women's Commission," "Women's Division," "Women's Studies Conference/Newsletter," "Women's Student Government," "Women's Studies Program Advisory Committee," and "Women's Week."

Oral History Collection:
This collection contains personal interviews with women on topics such as the History of Gettysburg College and World War II / Women in World War II / World War II-Homefront. Paper copies of these transcripts are available in the Reading Room.

Photo Albums and Scrapbooks:
See the College History page for a list of the scrapbooks and photo albums of Gettysburg College women.
