Volunteer Opportunities
Each year Gettysburg students devote more than 20,000 hours of their time working with the community. Here are some examples:
Youth and Families
- Big Brothers Big Sisters - Work with the SMART mentoring program, which pairs college students with second- and third-graders.
- El Centro - Join dozens of Gettysburg students who help with this popular after-school program for Latino children who live it near campus.
- Tutoring programs - Tutor young children with the Wee Care Learning Center or join the Migrant Education Tutoring Program and help Hispanic high school students.
- Generación Diez - Work with at-risk youth in school districts throughout Adams County.
- Coalition for Community Care - Take part in a variety of programs for children and adults to strengthen neighborhoods along the town of Gettysburg's Washington Street corridor.
Adults and Families
- Seeds to Success - Work with the Just Community Food System to provide life-skills training to prison inmates and adults performing court-ordered community service.
- Adams County Literacy Council - The council coordinates a variety of programs aimed at promoting literacy for adults, and helps coordinate Read Across America each March.
- Adams County Shelter for the Homeless - The shelter helps homeless children and adults in a number of ways.
- YWCA - Help young girls develop an appreciation for science through a YWCA program run on the Gettysburg campus.
Domestic and Global Issues
- Project Gettysburg/Léon - Join this educational and cultural exchange with Gettysburg's sister city of Léon, Nicaragua, which includes advocacy programs, community-enhancement efforts, and other projects.
- D.C. Outfitters - Travel to Washington, D.C., to distribute clothing and supplies to the homeless.
- Immersion Projects - Help publicize and coordinate College service-learning projects.
Community Agencies
Gettysburg College and the Adams County Volunteer Center work together to compile volunteer opportunities with more than 50 social-service agencies in and around Gettysburg. Students donate their time to fight poverty, help the homeless, promote good health, protect the environment, and support many other good causes.
