Bachelor of Science in Music Education

The Bachelor of Science Degree in Music Education is for students interested in K-12 certification to teach band, orchestra, choir and/or classroom music. This certification is reciprocal in other states. The four-year program is centered in a goals-based liberal arts curriculum that includes extensive opportunities in technology, world music, and service learning. Core courses in music theory, history, and conducting are integrated with a variety of music education and education classes that focus on reflective practice. A 9th semester extension option for the final student teaching experience is available, as are study abroad options in music. Studio instruction may be elected in multiple areas, and performance opportunities include both instrumental and choral ensembles.

Music education courses are rich with an extraordinary variety of practical teaching experiences, and students can develop leadership skills through internships, organization membership, and student-directed ensembles. The success rate for Bachelor of Science students seeking teaching positions is 100%. Most graduates complete advanced degree programs, and many graduates pursue careers in sacred music or higher education.
