James P. Ryon

Adjunct Assistant Professor, Sunderman Cons. of Music


Dr. James Ryon has performed as trombonist with the Baltimore Symphony, the Harrisburg Symphony, The Maryland Symphony, the Lancaster Symphony, the Baltimore Municipal Band, and others. He has also played numerous musicals and stage shows for such entertainers as Elvis Presley, Glenn Campbell, James Brown, Barry Manilow, The Ringling Brothers Circus, and others. Ryon is currently principal trombonist with the Gettysburg Chamber Symphony and the Two Rivers Chamber Orchestra, and second trombonist with the Shippensburg Summer Festival Orchestra. He is a founding member of the Chesapeake Brass Quintet, and a contractor and free lance player the Baltimore area.

Dr. Ryon has published brass arrangements with Kagarice Brass Editions (Denton, TX), Warwick Music (London, England) and Lyric Brass Publications (Westminster, MD).

Former teaching positions include The Carroll County Md. public schools (1971-2002), Messiah College (1996-2002), and St. Mary’s College of Maryland (1977).

Dr. Ryon is a member of the International Trombone Association and the American Federation of Musicians.

Volunteer activities include assisting with the ministry to homelessness in the Hanover, PA area.
