Newstead Trio to perform Nov. 2

Newstead Trio

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Newstead Trio will perform a classical recital Nov. 2 at Gettysburg College.

The program will begin at 2:30 p.m. in Schmucker Hall's Paul Recital Hall located along North Washington Street. The event will feature the works of Mendelssohn, Shostakovish and Yi. The event is free and open to the public.

Newstead Trio is an ensemble in residence at the Pennsylvania Academy of Music. The group is composed of Michael T. Jamanis, violin; Sara Male, cello; and Xun Pan, piano. They have played in venues from New York to Beijing, where they made their debut with the Beijing and Shanghai symphonies. In April 2000, the Trio made its New York debut to a standing ovation at Carnegie's Weill Recital Hall. All three members of the Trio also serve as full-time members of the faculty at the Pennsylvania Academy of Music where they teach privately and give frequent master classes.

Jamanis has performed worldwide as founding member and violinist of the Newstead Trio. He earned degrees from the Juilliard School, Yale University and Rutgers University. He has worked under Bernard Greenhouse, Timothy Eddy, Claude Franck and Leonard Bernstein. Jamanis is the founder of the Music Naturally Summer Festival as well as the conductor of the String Orchestra and chair of the string department at the Academy. He is on the faculty of the Pennsylvania Academy of Music and Franklin & Marshall College. Jamanis joined the Academy's faculty in 1992.

Male's cello study began in her native Canada, where she earned the Victoria Conservatory of Music Principal Emeritus Prize. Male is the winner of national and international cello competitions and performance fellowships. As a national class winner in the Canadian Music Competition, she gave a solo performance at the Canadian National Arts Centre. She is the former member of the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra and is currently an active chamber music recitalist as a member of the Newstead Trio. Male joined the faculty of the Academy in 1993.

Born in Tianjin, China, Pan received his early musical training from his pianist parents, Pan Yi-Ming and Ying Shi-Zhen. He continued his studies at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing and Syracuse University, and received a doctorate of musical arts degree from Rutgers University. He was a winner of the Dr. Luis Sigall International Piano Competition in Chile in 1987 and Finna Awerbach International Piano Competition in New York in 1992. Pan has performed solo recitals worldwide from Carnegie Hall to Taiwan National Concert Hall. As the pianist of the Trio, he has appeared in Hungary, England, Russia, Chile, Singapore, China, Canada, Italy and many cities in the United States. Pan is the chairman of the piano department at the Academy and a visiting professor at the China Conservatory of Music in Beijing.

Gettysburg College is a highly selective four-year residential college of liberal arts and sciences with approximately 2,600 students. It is located on a 200-acre campus adjacent to Gettysburg National Military Park in Pennsylvania. The college was founded in 1832.
