Classical vocal, guitar recital to be performed Feb. 24
GETTYSBURG, Pa. - A recital featuring classical voice and guitar will be performed Feb. 24 at Gettysburg College.
The 8 p.m. performance will feature Sunderman Conservatory of Music Professors Jeffrey Fahnestock, tenor, and James Hontz, guitar, in Schmucker Hall's Paul Recital Hall located along North Washington Street. Pieces by composers Berkeley, Britten, Dowland, Fernando Sor and Hans Sachs will be performed. The event is open to the public at no charge.
Fahnestock has appeared across the United States with groups such as the Folger Consort, Tulsa Oratorio Chorus, Cayuga Chamber Orchestra and Washington Bach Consort, and at the Tanglewood, Ravinia, Blossom and Aspen music festivals. A graduate of the Eastman School of Music and the Peabody Conservatory, he has taught studio voice, diction, vocal literature and opera survey at Gettysburg College and Susquehanna University.
Hontz earned a bachelor's degree in guitar performance from the New School of Music, a master of music degree in guitar performance and music history from Temple University and a doctor of musical arts degree in guitar performance from the Peabody Institute of Music at Johns Hopkins University. In addition to Gettysburg College, Hontz serves on the faculties of Dickinson College, Frederick Community College, Lincoln University and Harford Community College. He is a member of the board of directors of the Philadelphia Classical Guitar Society and served as a past president.
The Sunderman Conservatory of Music at Gettysburg College combines Gettysburg's superb music tradition and its strengths as one of the nation's leading liberal arts colleges. Established in 2005 through a $15.7 million gift from 1919 graduate Dr. F. William Sunderman Sr., the conservatory offers three degrees -- bachelor of music in performance, bachelor of arts in music, and bachelor of science in music education -- as well as a minor in music.
