Chamber Music

Few kinds of musical interaction provide individual musical development and an invigorating spirit of collaboration as powerfully as chamber music. The opportunity for chamber music performance at the Sunderman Conservatory is one of our hallmarks. The Conservatory is currently home to two resident faculty ensembles present frequent performances both on and off campus.

Students in the Bachelor of Music degree program will perform in a chamber ensemble each semester they are in residence. All other music majors are encouraged to participate in the chamber music program whenever possible.

Student chamber ensembles include standard ensembles such as brass and woodwind quintet, saxophone quartete, string quartet, piano trio, clarinet and flute choir, as well as unique ensembles that take advantage of the varied combinations of instruments and voice in the broad spectrum of the chamber music repertoire. For example, musicians in the World Music Ensemble explore the diverse repertoire of global music in its cultural and historical context, often with the addition of appropriate movement. Emphasis on particular global musical genres and styles varies by semester. Jazz Dispatch is a flexible group of 6-8 instrumentalists and a solo vocalist who rehearse and perform jazz standards and original compositions. Both ensembles are coached by faculty members, yet provide excellent opportunities for creative student leadership.
