Summer 2015 Student Employment and Housing Procedures

Summer break is an exciting time for students.  With academic stresses finally evaporating, you can fully enjoy the warm weather and beautiful days.  Beyond catching up on some rest and relaxation, you can use the summer months to make money, gain work experience, earn more course credits, or participate in research opportunities.  Regardless of your plans, it is not always easy to know where to begin.  This page is designed to help guide you in the pursuit of some of these goals.

Summer Employment Paperwork

There are a number of forms to be completed to hire summer help. The type of paperwork depends on the new employee's status as a student, as well as their work history with the College.  All student employees who have not worked on campus during the school year must fill out their hiring paperwork. Supervisors must return a completed copy of the Summer Student Data Form for each student employee to Student Employment Services at the Center for Career Development. For payroll purposes Gettysburg College graduated seniors will be considered a student employee until September 1, 2015.

On-Campus Summer Housing

On-campus summer housing can greatly simplify transportation and living for those who need to remain close to campus for a job, internship, research position, or summer classes.  Some summer positions provide free housing only if the student is REQUIRED to live on campus (i.e. "senior" research assistants in the sciences, Resident Assistants, etc.). Students will be instructed to contact their supervisor to find out whether their position qualifies them for free housing.  Departments are not permitted to pay for summer housing for those students who are not required to live on campus; however, departments may offer students a signing bonus, at their discretion.  Please keep in mind that the signing bonus is subject to tax which will be deducted first, and the remaining amount will be included in the student's regular paycheck on or after June 12.  For more information on summer housing (locations, eligibility and verification, fees, and the application process) go to the Residence Life website.  The application deadline for on-campus summer housing is Friday, April 17th, 2015. 

    Summer Employment and Housing Information Session

    4 pm in CUB 260

    Topics covered at this session will include cost, billing, on-campus housing locations and dates available, how to qualify for on-campus summer housing, summer payroll/human resources paperwork, etc.  Students and Supervisors are all welcome to attend.

    • Log into GettysburgWorks which provides information on both on- and off-campus jobs that may be available, GettysburgWorks also may contain listings for research positions and internships.

      PHEAA State Work-Study Program

      The Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) runs a job service for students that subsidizes wages for qualified employers in order to encourage them to hire college students.  You can learn more about this program on our website or through PHEAA

      Summer Classes 

      If you choose to continue your education into the summer months, we encourage you to consider the summer sessions at Dickinson College or Franklin and Marshall College.  Learn more about these programs.
