Department Learning Goals

Learning Goals for Chinese Studies & Japanese Studies Majors

  • To demonstrate proficiency at the advanced level or higher in all four language skills (reading, writing, speaking, listening) in Chinese or Japanese language, with the potential to integrate it into scholarly research.
  • To develop a historical and cultural awareness of the studied region as well as East Asia in general, and a solid, specialized knowledge in the field of Japanese or Chinese Studies.
  • To experience a semester (or more) of living and learning in China or Japan.
  • To develop the academic skills of formulating effective oral and written arguments, utilizing disciplinary methodology, and conducting research in primary and secondary sources.
  • To demonstrate the above skills through successful completion of a senior thesis with an oral defense.

Learning Goals for East Asian Studies Minors

  • To acquire introductory level proficiency (or higher) in all four language skills (reading, writing, speaking, listening) in Chinese or Japanese language. 
  • To develop a historical and cultural awareness of the studied region as well as East Asia in general, and some specialized knowledge in the field of Japanese or Chinese Studies.
  • To develop the academic skills of formulating effective oral and written arguments, utilizing disciplinary methodology, and conducting research in primary and secondary sources.
