Eager to get a head start on summer battlefield touring and/or explore a new part of the field? Join CWI’s Peter Carmichael; Gettysburg NMP’s Chris Gwinn; and Shepherd University’s James Broomall for a FREE guided walking tour of Culp’s Hill on Saturday, April 13, 2019. Carmichael (Director, Civil War Institute, Gettysburg College); Gwinn (Chief of Interpretation & Visitor Services, Gettysburg NMP); and Broomall (Director, George Tyler Moore Center for the Study of the Civil War, Shepherd University) will provide diverse perspectives and little-known stories of the fighting on Culp’s Hill. No reservations are necessary; those interested in participating should meet at Spangler’s Spring (Gettysburg NMP) at 9:30 am. The tour will conclude at 12:30 pm.
At 1:30 pm that afternoon, John Heckman, aka the "Tattooed Historian," will conduct a live interactive interview with James Broomall, Chris Gwinn and Peter Carmichael at Gettysburg Heritage Center (297 Steinwehr Ave). Free and open to the public, this interview will focus on “Letters from Gettysburg,” including a wrenchingly candid letter from John Futch, who fought at Culp’s Hill with the 3rd North Carolina, losing his brother in the process. Tour participants are encouraged to stay for this lively and interactive program, which will offer plenty of opportunities for questions from the audience.
The April 13th programming is made available through the collaborative efforts of Gettysburg College, Shepherd University, Gettysburg National Military Park, and the Gettysburg Heritage Center.
