A High Energy Option for 2022 Summer Conference Participants: Sharpshooting at Gettysburg

CWI is delighted to unveil its new “Active Track” conference option, a high-energy, walking-intensive alternative for part-time 2022 conference attendees. This opportunity is designed specifically for those who can only spend a few days at the conference (June 10-12) and prefer to be in the field as much as possible. The active track option will be led by Tim Orr, Associate Professor of History at Old Dominion University, and will dig deeply into the topic of sharpshooting at Gettysburg. This walking-intensive tour & part-time lecture package will survey some of the most famous incidents of long-range marksmanship and skirmish action at Gettysburg.

Participants will attend the regular Friday and Saturday morning lecture sessions with the rest of the conference attendees, but will then split off after lunch for a short classroom prep session discussing primary & secondary source documents related to sharpshooting at Gettysburg. Participants will then spend the remainder of Saturday (1:45 - 8:45 p.m.), as well as all day Sunday (8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.), out on the battlefield with Dr. Orr, exploring first-hand some of the major themes raised in the readings, and engaging in on-site group discussions about the various aspects of sharpshooters and sharpshooting at the battle of Gettysburg.

The field components will include a mix of coach bus travel and hiking, mostly centered on the Union left--Big Round Top, Little Round Top, and Devil's Den--but will also feature trips to Pitzer's Woods and the First Day’s field. This “active track” package will include a hike up the summit of Big Round Top, as well as other rigorous walks and climbs.

Participants can choose from a variety of housing/dining options, ranging from tuition-only to on-campus accommodations with a meal plan. Active Track participants staying on the Gettysburg College campus will be housed in the same dormitories as other conference participants. For participants who select this package with a meal plan, one Sunday boxed lunch will be provided, in addition to Friday night dinner and Saturday breakfast, lunch, and dinner in the dining hall. Participants who prefer not to purchase a meal plan may bring their own lunch on the bus on Sunday to eat with the group out in the field. Register today and save your space for this high-energy approach to Gettysburg tourism!
