Dr. Isherwood is a graduate of Gettysburg College, Dartmouth College, and the University of Glasgow, the latter where he did his Ph.D. in modern history. He specializes in twentieth century British history with an emphasis on the 1914-1945 period. Isherwood has further research interests in war and memory studies. His doctoral dissertation, ‘The Greater War: British Memorial Literature, 1918-1939’, concerned the British publishing industry and First World War veterans' memoirs.

Dr. Isherwood has taught in both the English and History Departments at Gettysburg College and in the History Department of neighboring Dickinson College.  At Gettysburg, Isherwood has taught courses in world history, college writing, British history, and war and memory studies. Additionally, he has supervised independent studies in Scottish history, the First World War, and the British Empire. At the Civil War Institute he supervises the CWI Fellows program and edits the institute's blog The Gettysburg Compiler, among other duties. Currently, Isherwood is writing a book, Remembering the Great War: Writing and Publishing the Experiences of WWI, for I.B. Tauris.
