Professor of Civil War Era Studies Allen C. Guelzo was honored on May 15 by the Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation for his work at a reception at the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C.
At the event, he received one of three 2018 Bradley Prizes and a $250,000 stipend, which is awarded to individuals of extraordinary talent, whose accomplishments reflect The Bradley Foundation's mission to restore, strengthen and protect the principles and institutions of American exceptionalism.
“Dr. Allen Guelzo is one of the country’s preeminent Civil War era historians and a leading authority on President Lincoln,” said Richard Graber, President and CEO of the Bradley Foundation. “His contributions have shaped important debate, thought and research on one of the most critical periods of American history. The Bradley Foundation is proud to award a Bradley Prize to Dr. Guelzo, a scholar who has served his field with great distinction.”
Having earned his BS in Biblical Studies from Cairn University and a MDiv from Reformed Episcopal Seminary, Guelzo continued his education at the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned both his MA and his PhD in history in 1979 and 1986, respectively.
Guelzo has taught at Gettysburg College since 2004 as the Henry R. Luce Professor of the Civil War Era, and has received the recently announced Gilder Lehrman NEH Professorship of Civil War Era Studies. Named one of Power Line’s 100 “Top Professors” in America, Guelzo is an award-winning author who has written for and appeared on numerous media outlets.
Among his many honors are a 2010 Grammy Award nomination for his part in a BBC Audio production of the entirety of the Lincoln-Douglas debates (with David Strathairn and Richard Dreyfuss); the Lincoln Award of the Union League of Philadelphia; and he is a three-time winner of the Lincoln Prize for his books about Abraham Lincoln. His Gettysburg: The Last Invasion was a 2013 New York Times best-seller. Guelzo is a former member of the National Council of the National Endowment for the Humanities and a Fellow of the Charles Warren Center for Studies in American History at Harvard University.
At the College, he has given a multi-part lecture series on both Abraham Lincoln and on the Civil War.
