Class Year: 2025
Major/Minor: Business, Organization, and Management & Economics
Program: CIEE Berlin, Germany
Identities I can speak to students about: Women abroad
Program specific experiences I can speak about: Dorm style living
Favorite experience:
One of my favorite experiences was navigating Berlin's public transportation system. It was nice not to have to worry about driving. I was amazed that I could walk outside my dorm building and get anywhere I needed to go. Relying on the U-Bahn (underground train) or the S-Bahn, and buses was surprisingly easy to navigate, especially from someone who rarely used public transportation in the United States. I quickly became confident and comfortable navigating through the city. Berlin stands out with its unique and vibrant atmosphere that no other city offers. The city presents a mix of history and innovation which was a thrill to explore.
What course/internship experience during your global study semester allowed you to learn something new and exciting?
One of the highlights was securing a spot in the Business in Brewing class, which I highly recommend to anyone in the programs, regardless of their major. It was fascinating to learn about the science and technical aspects of beer brewing, which is much more intricate than making wine. The class included several visits to breweries, where we had the opportunity to see the behind the scenes and understand the brewing process. I also gained insights into International Business within the European market by taking a variety of business classes and courses specifically about Germany’s history. I gained a better understanding of the different work life balance that Germans have compared to what people experience in the United States. Germans love to be early, or if not, promptly on time and get straight to the point (no small talk!).
How have your global studies related to one of the 7 Enduring Skills?
I would suggest to anyone if they have the opportunity to study abroad to do it. You have to be curious and willing to immerse yourself in a new culture while also being respectful. My experience studying abroad in Berlin and traveling to nearby countries exposed me to diverse communication styles. From figuring out navigation and public transportation to interacting with new people, I had to learn and adapt quickly. I gained more confidence to immerse myself into new situations and connect with others. By the end of my time abroad, I understood how Germans balanced their priorities to culturally value the shape of their everyday life.
