To maintain the health and safety of our campus community, employees are required to self-screen and monitor their symptoms before reporting to work each day, and are required to contact Human Resources if they are undergoing testing for COVID-19, are confirmed to have COVID-19, or have been in close contact with someone who tests positive.

Symptoms to watch for
Employees should self-screen each day before coming to work, looking for the following symptoms of COVID-19:
- Fever (temperature over 100.3 degrees F)
- New cough
- New shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
- New chills and/or repeated shaking with chills
- New muscle aches or pains
- New fatigue
- New gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or loss of appetite
- New loss of taste or smell
- Runny nose or new sinus congestion
- Sore throat
Steps to take
If you begin to experience symptoms of COVID-19, take these immediate steps:
- Contact your physician. Employees are encouraged to use telemedicine (video and phone visits) in order to limit potential exposure in physician offices. Follow your healthcare provider’s advice regarding testing, isolation, or quarantine.
- Stay home and do not come to work. If you begin to display symptoms consistent with COVID 19 while you are at work, please return home, while taking care to avoid contact with colleagues or students as you depart.
- Notify your supervisor to inform them of your absence and discuss options to work remotely. If you have not accrued enough sick time, please be in touch with your supervisor to make arrangements.
- Self-isolate until your physician clears you.
You may return to work after you receive either a negative test result or you have approval from your healthcare provider. You may only return to work when the following conditions have been met:
(1) you have been fever-free for at least 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications
(2) your symptoms of respiratory infection (not allergies or asthma) have improved
(3) at least 10 days have passed since your symptoms first appeared
Contact tracing and space cleaning
Human Resources, following direction from the CDC, will notify any members of the campus community known to be in close contact with an employee within our community who tests positive for COVID-19. If an employee is designated as a close contact, that employee will be required to self-quarantine, per CDC guidelines, and self-monitor for symptoms. If any employee is specifically named as a “close contact” through the contact tracing process, the College will offer testing to that individual on a voluntary basis free of charge. The College will maintain privacy to the greatest extent possible.
The College will follow the CDC guidelines for cleaning and disinfecting affected areas after the recommended 24-hour waiting period.
Accrual and use of sick time
In the event that an employee has exhausted their accrued paid sick time and remain off work due to COVID-19-related health concerns, the College temporarily will allow support staff to take up to 80 hours of paid sick time before it is accrued. This means that support staff may have a negative sick balance on a temporary basis for up to 80 hours. The support staff employee may maintain their vacation time in their account and still go in the negative for their sick time.
Prior to taking the un-accrued sick time, the support staff member will need to sign an authorization form allowing the College to make a payroll deduction from their final paycheck in order to satisfy any outstanding debt resulting from the use of un-accrued sick time if they terminate employment. Authorization forms are available from the employee’s supervisor or from Human Resources.
Support staff expanded leave policy
This policy has expanded the College’s current sick leave policy provided under the College's vacation, sick, disability, and leave of absence policies. This policy is only in effect for a specific period of time due to the COVID-19 pandemic, for which the dates will be determined by Human Resources. To be eligible for this expanded sick leave, employees must have been employed at Gettysburg College for at least one year.
Change to Sick Leave Policy for COVID 19 Related Sick Absences:
Absences for support staff employees unable to work in-person or remotely (if the employee’s job duties are capable of being performed remotely) due to one of the following reasons are considered excused absences and will be paid by the College for up to two weeks (in accordance with the employee’s standard schedule).
- Employees who are in a required self-isolation, exhibiting infectious symptoms, and/or have tested positive for COVID 19
- Employees who are asked to leave work due to signs and symptoms of COVID 19.
- Employees who must stay home and care for an immediate family member who has tested positive for COVID 19. (Employees should stay home if they have a household member with COVID 19).
Sick absences unrelated to COVID-19 or for employees who have been employed less than one year:
For all other sick-related absences, support staff may take up to 80 hours of paid sick time before it is accrued in the event that you have exhausted your accrued paid sick time and remain off work. This means that you may have a negative sick balance on a temporary basis for up to 80 hours.
Should your employment with the College terminate for any reason, you will be responsible for reimbursing the College for any used but unaccrued sick time. Prior to taking the unaccrued sick time, you will need to sign an authorization form allowing the College to make a payroll deduction from your final paycheck in order to satisfy any outstanding debt resulting from the use of unaccrued sick time. Authorization forms are available from the employee’s supervisor or from Human Resources.
If you wish, you may maintain your vacation time in your account and still go in the negative for your sick time.
