Employees have several options for managing the impact of COVID-19 on their health and well-being, including location flexibility, wellness resources, and virtual therapy.
On this page:
Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
For employees experiencing difficulties in any area of their lives, our Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is a free service for all employees and their dependents. Wellspan EAP has some helpful resources available in response to the Coronavirus outbreak.
Many employees are experiencing some kind of emotional distress given COVID-19’s disruption to their lives. In addition to the Employee Assistance Program, the College’s Counseling Center offers some helpful resources and wellness-related tips.
At-risk employees
Employees should bring their concerns to Human Resources, who will work with employees to discuss any available alternatives (e.g. use of vacation or sick leave, telecommuting, FMLA, ADA).
Employees working remotely
Employees who are experiencing any signs or symptoms of the flu or COVID-19 must visit their family physician, as they will have the patient’s full medical history. Employees must follow their healthcare provider’s advice regarding testing, isolation, or quarantine.
Highmark virtual visits
Highmark Blue Shield coverage offers virtual physical and mental health visits. Know your virtual visit options:
Employee testing
As we evaluated the fall semester and planned for the spring, we identified an important shift in our health and safety protocols: the testing of all employees who are regularly on campus. While we do not have reason to believe that the transmission of COVID-19 on our campus this fall originated from faculty or staff, or was spread to employees by students, we are introducing mandatory testing for all employees working on campus to further reduce the health risks within our community.
Testing protocols
If you intend to work on campus, even on a limited basis, you must be part of the College’s testing program. Employees who are working remotely for the spring semester will not be tested and, therefore, should not report for a COVID-19 test.
NOTE: If you choose not to be part of the College’s employee testing protocol, but you plan to regularly work on campus, you will not be permitted on campus. You must be part of the testing protocol in order to work on campus.
Testing timelines
On January 11-13, we conducted baseline testing of Gettysburg College employees. Employees in our initial round of testing were those who are essential to campus operations for when our students arrived. These were individuals who were unable to work remotely and/or employees who needed to be available for student move-in. More specifically, most employees in Dining, Facilities, DPS, the Health Center, and some student-facing positions met this criterion.
Faculty and staff who are teaching and/or working on campus, even on a limited or rotational basis, must be tested on a regular basis. This includes faculty and staff who are visiting their office or work area on a limited basis. Faculty and staff who work in areas identified as high-traffic, resulting in possible increased exposure, must be tested two times per month (the first and third weeks of each month). Faculty and staff who work in areas identified as non-high-traffic will be tested one time per month (the second week of each month).
As of the week of March 8th, employee testing is conducted on a walk-in basis with no appointments required. Testing takes place Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 7am to 9am and Thursdays and Fridays from 7am to 5pm. Pre-screening questions are emailed Tuesday through Friday to those scheduled to be tested that week, allowing for quick access to the testing facility. Faculty and staff are responsible to ensure they are tested during the week to which they are assigned. If you are unable to be tested, email hr@gettysburg.edu as soon as possible. If you miss your test, you are not permitted to return to campus until you complete your test in Plank Gym. If you are unable to perform your job responsibilities while remaining off campus due to a missed test, you must notify your supervisor immediately.
Testing logistics
The College is able to institute testing for employees this spring due to a new partnership we’ve established with the testing company Mobile Health. This company will provide all of the logistics for our testing program, including scheduling your testing time, performing your test (a highly reliable PCR nasal swab, widely viewed as less invasive than other tests currently available), and notifying you of your results. We are pleased that Mobile Health will provide all employees with the privacy we have been seeking in a testing company.
If you test positive, you will be required to quarantine for 10 days. The College will conduct contact tracing only for contacts you have had on campus. Additionally, if you are named as a contact through our contact tracing process, you will be tested on campus.
Absences for a support staff employee unable to work in person or remotely (if the employee’s job duties are capable of being performed remotely) due to one of the reasons below are considered excused absences, and the employee will be paid by the College for up to two weeks (in accordance with the employee’s standard schedule).
- Employees who are in a required self-isolation, exhibiting infectious symptoms, and/or have tested positive for COVID-19.
- Employees who are asked to leave work due to signs and symptoms of COVID-19.
- Employees who must stay home and care for an immediate family member who has tested positive for COVID-19 (Employees should stay home if they have a household member with COVID-19).
If a faculty or staff member comes into close contact with a positive case or tests positive outside of our campus testing process, they must inform the Human Resources Office as soon as possible. If you have concerns or questions related to this program, please contact Human Resources.
Testing locations
There are various COVID-19 testing locations available to symptomatic patients and the general public in the Gettysburg area, Hanover area, Chambersburg area, and York area.
Since we are limited in our ability to provide on-campus employee testing, we want to reinforce that there are local testing sites that offer the same, or shorter, turnaround time than the tests provided by CSI, our on-campus testing partner. We encourage employees unable to receive a test through CSI to pursue opportunities presented by local sites.
