Fellowships and Scholarships
Fellowships and scholarships are funded opportunities to complete a project, take on a particular role, or study a specific subject. They are usually of a fixed duration and often involve traveling to a particular institution where you will be hosted as a "fellow" for the duration of the fellowship period.
The following list, arranged alphabetically, includes some of the major fellowships and scholarships available. Most are for post-baccalaureate study. Many awards require nomination by Gettysburg College. It is not an all-inclusive list, so be sure to explore according to your interests or schedule a fellowship appointment through Handshake.

The Beinecke Scholarship is a $34,000 award for the senior undergraduate year and graduate study in a field in which the student demonstrates unusual ability and promise, within the arts, humanities, or social sciences. An initial grant of $4,000 is followed by a $15,000 stipend during each of the first two years of graduate study.

- Be an undergraduate junior at the time of application.
- Be a US citizen or US national.
- Plan to enter a master's or doctoral program in the arts, humanities, or social sciences.
- Have demonstrated superior standards of intellectual ability, scholastic achievement, and personal promise in your undergraduate career
- Have a documented history of receiving need-based financial aid during college.
- Be nominated by Gettysburg College. Nomination decisions will be made by a campus committee after review of application materials submitted for the campus deadline.

The Boren Scholarship provides up to $25,000 to undergraduate students living in the United States to study abroad in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad programs, including Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East.

- Be United States citizens at the time of the national application deadline
- Have a high school diploma, or have earned a GED
- Be at least 18 years or older at the time of the national application deadline
- Be planning an overseas program in a country outside of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand, and in a country in which they are not a citizen

The James C. Gaither Junior Fellow Program provides a paid one-year fellowship at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington, DC, where fellows will serve as research assistants to senior fellows on matters relating to the current work of the foundation.

- Be a current senior, or an alum within one year of receiving the BA but not in graduate school.
- Demonstrate superior research skills and academic strengths in a field which matches Carnegie's ongoing research programs.
- Have a highly competitive GPA.

The CLS provides funding for intensive overseas summer language institutes in 13 critical foreign languages and the corresponding difficulty levels: Azerbaijani, Hindi, Indonesian, Persian, Portuguese, Swahili, Turkish, and Urdu (beginning, advanced beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels); Arabic, Chinese, Korean, and Russian (advanced beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels); and Japanese, (intermediate and advanced levels).

- Provide proof of literacy in chosen language if applying beyond beginner levels

A German government program, DAAD has dozens of available grants to enable North American undergraduate and graduate students to study in Germany – from 3-week summer internships to a full year of study/research. These are available to students in all fields, including the natural sciences.
- Programs include:
- Undergraduate Scholarship: 4-10 months of study.
- Study Scholarship: for graduating seniors to spend the next year in Germany.
- Research Internship in Science & Engineering: summer research (no language required).
- University Summer Course Grant: summer courses at German universities.
- Study & Internship Program: coursework plus internship.
- German Studies Research Grant: short-term research in Germany.
- EMGIP-Bundestag Internship: 2 months in the German Bundestag.

The Fulbright US Student Programs provide full funding for one academic year abroad for research/study or teaching English.
- Application process starts: April (students must attend an information session by the end of April to be eligible to continue)

- Be a US citizen
- Hold a bachelor's degree before the beginning date of grant.
- Present a plan or project which can be completed in one academic year.
- Participate in Gettysburg's Fulbright application process and take part in a committee interview.

The Gates Cambridge Scholarship provides full tuition plus a living stipend for the graduate program of your choice at the University of Cambridge.
- Preliminary deadline: June
- Final deadline: August
- Candidates must:
- Have a demonstrated record of academic achievement, leadership activity, and service to their community.
- Gain admission to the University of Cambridge and to a constituent college.
- Hold a bachelor’s degree by the start of your Cambridge program.

Gilman Award recipients can receive up to $5,000, and must use the award to defray eligible study or intern abroad costs. These costs include program tuition, room and board, books, local transportation, insurance, international airfare, passport and visa fees.

- Candidates must:
- Be a citizen of the United States.
- Be an undergraduate student in good standing at an accredited institution of higher education in the United States.
- Be receiving a Federal Pell Grant during the time of application, or provide proof that they will be receiving a Pell Grant during the term of their study abroad program or internship.
- Be in the process of applying to, or accepted for, a study abroad or internship program or virtual international program of at least three weeks, eligible for credit from Gettysburg College.
- Be applying for credit-bearing study abroad programs in a country or area with an overall Travel Advisory Level 1 or 2, according to the U.S. Department of State's Travel Advisory System.

The Goldwater Scholarship supports undergraduate study leading to research careers in mathematics or natural science or engineering. Awards up to $7,500 for the remaining undergraduate year(s) of study.
- Application process starts: August/September

- Candidates must:
- Be a sophomore or junior at time of application
- Be a US citizen, national, or resident alien
- Have a highly competitive GPA (preferably 3.7)
- Have at least one significant research experience to date.

The James Madison Fellowship provides up to $24,000 toward payments of tuition and fees, books, and room and board to support students partaking in graduate study that leads to a Master of Arts, a Master of Arts in Teaching, or a Master of Education degree.
- Final deadline: March
- Candidates must:
- Be a US citizen.
- Plan to become a teacher, of American history, American government, or civics classes where you will teach topics on the Constitution at the secondary school level (grades 7–12).
- Possess a bachelor’s degree or plan to receive a bachelor’s degree no later than August 31 of the year in which you are applying.

The Marshall Scholarship provides funding for graduate study in a British college or university for one or two years. Awards include full tuition, living allowance, book grant, thesis grant, research grant, and travel allowance.

- Be a US citizen.
- Be a current or rising senior, or have received the BA after the April two years prior to the year of application.
- Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.7.
- Have an outstanding academic record, creative and original leadership experience, extensive community service, and ambassadorial potential.

The Mitchell Scholarship supports one year of graduate study or research at one of the universities in Ireland or Northern Ireland. Includes full tuition, accommodations, living expenses, and an international travel stipend.

- Candidates must:
- Be a US citizen.
- Have a record of intellectual distinction, leadership activity, and extra-curricular activity.
- Demonstrate honesty, integrity, fairness and unselfish service to others, indicating a potential for future leadership and contribution to society.
- Have a bachelor's degree prior to the beginning of graduate study.
- Be between the ages of 18 and 30 at the time of application.

The NSF-GRFP provides a 3-year annual stipend of $32,000 along with a $12,000 cost of education allowance for tuition and fees, opportunities for international research and professional development, and the freedom to conduct your own graduate research at any accredited US institution of graduate education you choose.

- Be a US citizen, US national, or permanent resident.
- Intend to pursue a research-based master’s or PhD program in an NSF-supported field.
- Be enrolled in an eligible program at an accredited US graduate institution by the fall following your NSF application.
- Have completed no more than 12 months of full-time graduate study (or the equivalent) as of the August 1st prior to the deadline.
- Meet all other eligibility requirements as set forth in the current Program Solicitation (review website for more details).

The Pickering Graduate Fellowship is funded by the US Department of State and administered by Howard University. It provides up to $42,000 annual funding for graduate study in foreign affairs, plus mentoring and professional development to help prepare fellows for entry into the US Foreign Service. Applications from members of minority groups historically underrepresented in the US State Department, women, and those with a demonstrated financial need for graduate school are encouraged.

- Be a U.S. citizen.
- Simultaneously be seeking admission to a 2-year, full-time graduate degree program in public policy, international affairs, public administration, business, economics, political science, sociology, or foreign languages (excluding law school).

The Rhodes Scholarship provides full funding (tuition and stipend) for graduate study (or a second bachelor’s degree) at the University of Oxford in the UK.
- Application process starts: May/June

- Candidates must:
- Be at least 18 and not yet 24 years of age.
- Be a US citizen or a lawful permanent resident.
- Complete their bachelor’s degree prior to beginning studies at Oxford.
- Demonstrate academic achievement, leadership, community service, concern for and protection of the weak, and vigor in extracurricular activities.

The Truman Scholarship provides up to $30,000 in support for graduate or professional studies toward a public service-related degree, plus leadership training and networking.

- Be a college junior at the time of application, in the top quarter of the class.
- Be a US citizen, permanent resident, or US national.
- Demonstrate significant leadership and a commitment to public service.

The Udall Scholarship provides up to $5,000 towards tuition and other college expenses to college sophomores and juniors for leadership, public service, and commitment to issues related to Native American nations or to the environment. Scholars also attend a Udall Orientation in August in Tucson, AZ, and will gain access to a nationwide network of environmental, Native American health, and tribal policy professionals.

- Be a college sophomore or junior at the time of application.
- Have a college GPA of at least a "B."
- Be a US citizen, permanent resident, or US national.
- Demonstrate commitment to the environment and plan to pursue careers related to the environment; or be Native American or Alaska Native student who demonstrates commitment to careers related to tribal public policy or Native health care.
