A Rich Cultural and Academic Journey Choosing to minor in Italian at Gettysburg means more than just learning a language—it’s about immersing yourself in one of the world’s most vibrant cultures. Through dynamic coursework, hands-on cultural activities, and the opportunity to study abroad in Florence, the program offers a rich and rewarding academic journey that complements any major and opens the door to global possibilities.

Interdisciplinary and Flexible Curriculum

The curriculum combines language acquisition with interdisciplinary exploration. After completing Intermediate Italian I and II, students take two upper-level courses taught in Italian and two courses taught in English that explore Italian culture through the lenses of history, art, gender studies, or literature. Students who place into more advanced Italian may waive lower-level courses, and up to two courses taken abroad can count toward the minor.

Ready to tackle real-world Lights, camera, Italia! Explore Italy’s world-famous cinematic tradition in ITAL 308, taught entirely in Italian. From the raw grit of post-war neorealism to the bold visions of modern auteurs, you’ll examine how film reflects and reshapes Italian identity. With directors like Fellini, De Sica, and Sorrentino as your guides, you’ll analyze narrative style, symbolism, and historical context—while also growing your fluency through film criticism and discussion. A must for lovers of language, culture, and the visual arts.
ITAL 265 Made in Italy: Fashion, Food, and Design
Why does “Made in Italy” stand for excellence around the globe? ITAL 265, taught in English, unpacks the global appeal of Italian fashion, cuisine, and industrial design. Through case studies, media analysis, and cultural critique, you’ll explore how Italy blends tradition with innovation. Prof. Daria Bozzato

Visiting Assistant Professor

“The ‘osmotic interaction’ between instructors and students is the most powerful resource a professor has.”

Italian Studies Prof. Daria Bozzato joined Gettysburg College to share her passion for Italian language, literature, and culture within an academic community that engages education with interdisciplinary inquiry and critical spirit. She firmly believes her role is to be an intellectual facilitator, a cultural intermediary who has to inspire the future citizens of a diverse and respectful society.

“The ‘osmotic interaction’ between instructors and students is the most powerful resource a professor has,” said Bozzato.

Bozzato’s research intertwines literature, science, philosophy, and visual arts. Her scholarship investigates the Italian esoteric environment at the turn of the twentieth century, and specifically examines the influence of spiritualism, mediumistic practices, and the magic on Italian Futurist manifestos, art, and photography.

More recently, Bozzato has been working on how the biological psychiatric approach fostered the alienation and physical annulment of mentally ill individuals in Italy. This research is specifically geared toward the years prior to the approval of Italian Law 180/1978, also known as Basaglia law, which revolutionized mental health in Italy and regarded patients as people and not objects.

Community Beyond the Classroom

Outside the classroom, your study of Italian comes alive through a variety of engaging opportunities. Students gather twice a month for Tavola Italiana, an Italian-language lunch hosted by faculty that encourages conversation and community. The Cineteca Film Forum brings students together to enjoy and discuss Italian films, offering cultural insight through cinema. The Italian Club organizes pasta-making nights, opera trips, bocce tournaments, and other social events that celebrate the spirit of Italy.

Recognizing Excellence and Supporting Engagement

Academic excellence is also celebrated through the Gamma Kappa Alpha Italian Honor Society, which recognizes outstanding students and supports deeper cultural engagement. Funding is available through the Italian Student Enrichment Fund, making it easier for students to participate in extracurricular events and cultural activities. Each year, the department hosts the Italian Literary Prize, encouraging students to showcase their Italian writing skills for a chance to win recognition and cash awards.

Study Abroad in Florence, Italy

A highlight of the program is the opportunity to study in Florence, Italy, through Gettysburg’s approved partnership with Syracuse University. Students can spend a semester immersed in Italian life, taking courses in language, civilization, and other disciplines while experiencing the country firsthand. This abroad experience not only strengthens language skills but deepens cultural understanding and global perspective.

Graduates of the program leave with more than just linguistic ability. They gain strong analytical and communication skills, cultural fluency, and the confidence to engage with the world.
