Charles D. (Buz) Myers, Jr., holds an A.B. degree from Duke University plus an M.Div. degree and a Ph.D. degree in New Testament language and literature from Princeton Theological Seminary. Before arriving at Gettysburg College in 1986 Dr. Myers taught biblical studies courses at Princeton Seminary, at the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia, and at Swarthmore College. While at Gettysburg Prof. Myers has been honored three times with the Student Senate's “Faculty Appreciation Award” for excellence in teaching (1988, 1990, 2001). He has also held the “Edwin T. and Cynthia Shearer Johnson Distinguished Teaching Chair” (2002-2005). In the fall of 2011 Dr. Myers became the inaugural recipient of the “Dr. Ralph Cavaliere Teaching Award,” which was determined by a vote of the Gettysburg College student body.
For thirteen years (1995-2005, 2009-2012) Dr. Myers served as Chair of the Department of Religious Studies at Gettysburg College. He has also served on and chaired the College's Student Life Committee, the Faculty Personnel Committee, and the Faculty Governance Committee.
For ten years Dr. Myers was the Recording Secretary for the Revised Standard Version Bible Committee whose work culminated in the 1989 publication of the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible. His published work appears in scholarly journals and in the Anchor Bible Dictionary, a multi-volume reference work. He is also co-editor of and contributor to Biblical Theology: Problems and Prospects (Atlanta: Abingdon, 1995) and co-author with Donald L. Griggs of Mark’s Gospel from Scratch: The New Testament for Beginners (Louisville: Westminster John Knox, 2010).
Dr. Myers, an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), teaches and preaches regularly in local churches and at regional and national conferences. For the six years he also offered a weekly class entitled “Bible Discoveries” to some 50 convicted male felons at the Pennsylvania State Correctional Institution at Camp Hill. For his work in prison ministry Dr. Myers received SCI-Camp Hill’s “Volunteer of the Year Award” for 2010.
Buz Myers is married to the Rev. Anne Kimrey Myers who is also a Presbyterian minister. Anne currently serves as [Carlisle] Presbytery Associate for Church Visitation. Buz and Anne have two grown daughters. Their elder daughter Annabelle, a 2009 graduate of Gettysburg College, teaches French at her alma mater, Camp Hill [PA] High School, while their younger daughter Charlotte, a 2010 graduate of Davidson [NC] College and a 2015 gradute of the medical school at Wake Forest University, is a Resident in Pathology at the Houston Methodist Medical Center. Buz and Anne have one grandson, Liam.
