The Eisenhower Institute at Gettysburg College is profoundly saddened by the death of General Colin Powell. His life exemplified the highest ideals of what this Institute stands for: leadership, service, civility and nonpartisan approaches to the most challenging issues of our time.

“All of us are deeply saddened by the death of General Colin Powell,” said EI Expert in Residence Susan Eisenhower. “He was an energetic, vibrant leader who will long be remembered for his decades of dedicated service to the United States. He will be greatly missed. Our condolences to Alma Powell and their family.”

In 1993, our predecessor the Eisenhower World Affairs Institute and Gettysburg College recognized General Powell with the Eisenhower Leadership Award. In his acceptance speech, General Powell noted that President Eisenhower, who signed his commission as Second Lieutenant, was one of his heroes.

“The parallels between the lives of President Eisenhower and General Powell are hard to ignore. Both were extraordinary military leaders turned statesmen who felt a profound sense of duty to country on and beyond the battlefield,” said EI Executive Director Tracie Potts. “They answered the call to serve, and neither let politics or party get in the way of good government.”
