Social Media

On social media, the Gettysburg College community shared moments of both energy and reflection throughout the fall 2024 semester.

Under The Lights

The energy was electric during the first-ever night football game on Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium on Oct. 4, 2024. With a victory over McDaniel College combined with the strength of the Gettysburg College community, the shared sense of spirit and connection flowed across the College’s social media channels:

“It was a fantastic night!.”
Dawn Leidich Hopke ’96 | Facebook

“Well done, keep improving, keep growing.”
James TenBrook ’85 | Facebook

“Excited to witness the start of this new era! #UnderTheLights #GettysburgCollege ”

Northern Lights

On Oct. 10, 2024, Gettysburg College students captured the rare appearance of the northern lights, also known as the aurora borealis, appearing in breathtaking waves of greens and reds. Our community enjoyed the students’ photos, including the photo below by Jazmine Sanchez ’26.

“Beautiful!!!”
Stephanie Pullara Vancura P’25 | Facebook

“How great is this?! Would’ve been amazing to witness firsthand, but G’burg students delivered! #GburgPODs #StudentCam ”

An Inspiring Visit

After meeting with the Pennsylvania Legislative Black Caucus, the Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr. visited Africana Studies Prof. Hakim Mohandas Amani Williams’ class Education for Social Change on Oct. 22, 2024. Together with his son, former Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., they spoke about Gettysburgians’ responsibility as engaged citizens to vote. Members of our community reflected:

“It was [an] awesome experience to be a part of helping to bring Rev. Jesse Jackson to campus as a member of the Gettysburg Alumni of Color Council at Gettysburg College. … As an alumni, it brought a smile to [my] face to see this happen at such short notice.”
Edmund Hardy ’09, Vice President of the Gettysburg Alumni of Color Council | Linkedin

“I ended up unexpectedly next to a civil rights icon this week. Rev. Jesse Jackson visited @gettysburg with @RPCoalition encouraging students to vote. He shook my hand warmly for the second time in six years. He hasn’t let age or health deter him from fighting for justice. #KeepHopeAlive ”

Civil Discourse

Ahead of the 2024 U.S. Elections, Gettysburg College Democrats and Gettysburg College Republicans issued a joint statement pledging to put country over party, regardless of the outcome. Turn to page 25 to read the statement in full. Upon sharing it across the College’s social media, Gettysburgians spoke up as engaged citizens:

“Beautifully written, factual, and inspirational. Gratitude, humanity, respect for others, personal responsibility, and accountability. Proud of you, Gettysburg College students and community.”
Greg Natello ’76 | Facebook

“President Iuliano said it a while back, but it’s moments like these that show the true values of our students and our campus community and makes me forever proud to be a Gettysburgian! #gettysburgreat” ”
