Reaffirming and Reimagining America’s Alliances

Eisenhower was a seasoned realist. He’d seen up close the devastation of war. He was clear-eyed about the life-and-death consequences of putting American lives on the line to defend our allies. Yet he still believed, as he responded in a letter to that soldier, that – quote – ‘True human objectives comprise something far richer and more constructive than mere survival of the strong.’ ” – Secretary Blinken
