Tackling issues of climate change

In a yearlong virtual seminar, 14 students dove into complex issues surrounding climate change to gain a better understanding of the fundamentals of strategic thinking and leadership.

Strategy and Leadership in Transformational Times (SALTT) prepares a select group of Gettysburg College students to lead in the moments that shape history. Under the direction of expert-in-residence Susan Eisenhower, participants use case studies and learn from experts to examine the tenets of strategic thinking and how it can be used to address rapidly changing political, social, and business environments.

After a semester spent honing their strategic thinking skills, the cohort split into two groups to craft a strategic plan based on their chosen issues: a lack of green spaces in urban areas and the proliferation of single-use plastics.

In reflecting on his project, Logan Grubb ’21 noted, “The most important lesson that Susan instilled was a part of any good strategy is understanding the importance of time. Time is a resource like anything else and any good strategist will develop a flexible strategy that can adapt to changes in your timeline.” 

Lizzie Hobbs ’21 and Connor Heath ’23 interviewed Prof. Sarah Principato, Thompson Endowed Chair in Environmental Studies, for a podcast on climate change.

After designing their strategies, both groups created websites to spread awareness and resources relating to their project to their communities. The students also had an opportunity to deliver presentations and field questions from experts based in Washington, D.C., as well as SALTT alumni.

“While the virtual seminar certainly had its challenges, I am proud of this group of students for overcoming adversity, remaining positive, and pushing themselves and their peers to learn new virtual collaboration skills,” Eisenhower said. “It was gratifying to see the development of their thinking in decision making and problem solving. I am excited to see what they all accomplish next. I want to thank, especially, the three seniors for demonstrating leadership in all aspects of the program and I wish them the best in the coming years.”

Jessiey Ken-Kwofie ’21 reflected that her participation in the program was a “fundamental experience to wrap up my career at Gettysburg College.” She shared that SALTT helped “prepare me for my future endeavors . . . and I am confident I will be able to apply my SALTT ‘toolbox’ to solve challenges in my professional career.”
