Senior French majors attend seminar on ‘Relating the Reality of Genocide: The Question of Fiction’

Senior French majors enrolled in the seminar, “Representations of Violence in French and Francophone Comics”, along with students enrolled in 200 and 300 level French courses attended this roundtable featuring Jean-Philippe Stassen, graphic novelist and journalist, and Jean-Pierre Karegeye, Visiting International Scholar of Philosophy at Dickinson College and Director of the Interdisciplinary Genocide Studies Center in Rwanda. We discussed the representation of the Rwandan Genocide in Stassen’s graphic novel Déogratias (2000), as well as the different approaches he adopted in his more journalistic work for the journals XXI and LRD. We also focused on the technical, ethical, and historical problems of representing genocide in works of fiction produced after the Rwandan Genocide.
