The Sunderman Conservatory of Music at Gettysburg College welcomes the GRAMMY Award-winning chamber choir The Crossing to perform at Gettysburg College’s Christ Chapel on Friday, September 6 at 8:00 p.m. The group will perform a program titled “What belongs to me?” The free concert is open to the public and is funded by the Sunderman Chamber Music Foundation.

The Crossing, conducted by Donald Nally is dedicated to new music, frequently working with creative teams to make and record new, substantial works that expand ways of composing, singing, and listening to music for choir. The Crossing has commissioned and premiered nearly 190 new compositions for choir, many of which address social, environmental, and political issues. With a commitment to recording its commissions, The Crossing has issued 34 releases, receiving three Grammy Awards for Best Choral Performance (2018, 2019, 2023), and nine Grammy nominations.

What belongs to me?” is a musical journey that will stimulate the mind and delight the ears. Featuring works written for The Crossing, the program begins with music by composer David Lang from his work poor hymnal that ponders a central tension of community: what is our responsibility to others? The program progresses to music by Shara Nova (who also performs under the moniker My Brightest Diamond), Gabriella Ortiz, and Ayanna Woods. Many of the works on the program wrestle with social themes; Woods’ Infinite Body explores ways capitalism influences our perspectives of ourselves and others.

“The Crossing is a leading international ensemble and to experience them in performance is simply transformative,” observed Dr. James Day, Director of the Sunderman Conservatory of Music at Gettysburg College. “We have a long tradition of presenting excellent choral performances at Gettysburg and The Crossing will build upon this tradition to present an exciting program of new and innovative music. We are thrilled to welcome this ensemble to Gettysburg to perform for the benefit of the campus and surrounding community.”

Admission to The Crossing is free and seating will be available on a first-come-first-served basis. No tickets are required. Doors open at 7:30PM and concert begins at 8:00PM. Community members interested in attending are encouraged to contact the Sunderman Conservatory for more information at (717) 337-6815. Christ Chapel is located at 325 North Washington Street, Gettysburg. Free parking for the performance is available in Gettysburg College’s Constitution Parking Lot.

The Sunderman Conservatory of Music at Gettysburg College devotes itself to the development of the art of music in the lives of the campus and broader community by blending excellent, comprehensive musical training with Gettysburg College's strengths as one of the nation's leading liberal arts colleges. The Sunderman Chamber Music Foundation was established at Gettysburg College in 1983 by F. William Sunderman for the purpose of building community through great music. The foundation fully funds several concerts each year that are free and open to the public.
