Gettysburg College has several ways students can feel safe and enjoy their time at the College. Through a top-notch private security team and dedicated safety programs like the CampusShield app, the Campus Safety team dedicates themselves 24/7 to making the campus as safe as it can be.
Associate Dean of College Life and Executive Director of Campus Safety Alex Wiltz puts student security at the forefront of his work, and with his experience, prepares the campus for any potential dangers. Here are his top five things to know about safety at Gettysburg:

1. A dedicated Campus Safety team is available 24/7.
Our full-time Campus Safety team is on duty 24/7, ensuring students always have someone to turn to in case of an emergency. Whether you need a Safety Escort across campus at night, assistance with a lockout, or immediate support, Campus Safety is just a phone call away, at 717-337-6911. Their goal is to foster a safe, welcoming environment where students can thrive.

2. Our campus is designed with safety in mind.
From well-lit pathways to residence halls that require ID card access, our campus infrastructure prioritizes security. Additionally, the CampusShield app gives students an easy way to connect with Campus Safety, report concerns, and share their location with trusted friends while walking at night.

3. Our residence halls prioritize student safety.
Living on campus is an integral part of the Gettysburg experience, and our residence halls are designed with security in mind. ID card access is required for entry, and Campus Safety regularly patrols residential areas. Each hall also has a dedicated team of student and professional staff who provide support, helping students feel comfortable and secure in their home away from home.

4. We provide resources for smart decision-making.
Going to college is full of new experiences, and we want students to feel confident in making safe choices. Through programs on personal safety, alcohol awareness, and bystander intervention, we empower students to look out for themselves and each other. By fostering a culture of responsibility and respect, we help students develop lifelong safety habits.

5. Help is always within reach.
Emergencies are rare, but when they do happen, it’s important to know where to turn. Gettysburg College’s robust emergency notification system keeps students informed during a campus emergency. Campus Safety also works closely with local police, fire, and medical services to ensure a fast, coordinated response whenever needed.
