The Eisenhower Institute is pleased to announce three programs for the spring 2022 semester: Emerging Threats in National Security, Inside Civil Rights, and Women and Leadership.
The Institute’s newest program, Emerging Threats in National Security, is led by Gettysburg College alumna Annie Morgan ’06, a defense attorney engaged in investigations of torture and human rights violations. Students will get the chance to deep dive into U.S. security policy and gain a basic foundation of national security. “I'm very excited for this program for a number of reasons,” said Morgan. “Gettysburg is a place that will always be near and dear to my heart and I'm excited to have the opportunity to give back to a school that gave so much to me. I am excited to share my perspective on the broad range of national security issues that our country is facing with a generation of students that is very much engaged with these issues on a day-to-day basis.”
Inside Civil Rights will be led by a team of experts from Gettysburg College’s Africana Studies Department, Prof. Scott Hancock and Prof. Tyeshia Redden. “In the past, the Inside Civil Rights program has examined the ups and downs of the process of integrating public education during what’s typically labeled the Civil Rights Movement,” said Prof. Redden. “This year, we add to that with a new and separate examination of how civil rights have played out—or not—from that era through the present, including African Americans’ efforts to obtain decent housing, build stable neighborhoods, and gain equal access to resources in Washington, D.C.” During the program, students will get a hands-on experience conducting field observations and research as they visit the city to see how past developments impact today’s lived experience.
Women and Leadership returns again this year and will continue explore the intersections between gender and leadership in government, business, media, law, politics, science, and athletics. The program is headed by Prof. Anne Douds, Assistant Professor and Chair of Gettysburg's Public Policy Program. Past participant Vanessa Igras ’24 describes her experience as “an amazing opportunity, and it quickly became a safe space for me and the other participants to talk about our personal experience as women striving to work in leadership positions. I was able to make some amazing connections with various students and mentors.”
The deadline to apply to these programs is December 12, 2021. Gettysburg College students from any class year and major are encouraged to apply.
