All students who have previously studied Japanese or Chinese and wish to continue the language must take a placement exam to determine the proper level to register for. The exam allows the professors to assess skill level for appropriate course placement.
Students who have studied Chinese should take the online placement test. Incoming students will receive a packet from the Office of Residential & First-Year Programs in mid-May with important Orientation and First-Year Dashboard (online system) information. You will be able to take the placement exam from the Dashboard. For borderline test scores, a follow-up email notice will be sent for the final decision and, if needed, an interview will be held during Orientation Week.
Students who have studied Japanese should plan to be tested and interviewed during Orientation Week for proper placement. The exam is both written and oral. Students will be asked to take the written portion of the exam first and will then meet individually with the professor for the oral exam.
Students who have not previously studied the language and are enrolled in a 100-level language course are not required to take the exam.
