Suzanne J. Flynn received her PhD from the University of Virginia. In her teaching, she focuses on British literature of the mid-nineteenth to the early-twentieth century. At the advanced level, her courses tend to be strongly interdisciplinary. Victorian Aesthetics (ENG 333) and The Birth of Modernism (ENG 339), for example, are studies of the culture of England during the period from 1850 to 1880 and from 1880 to 1920, respectively. Her own scholarship has focused on the work of a writer who crossed the boundary between Victorian and modern: Thomas Hardy. She is most intrigued by Hardy's ability to excel as both a novelist and poet and by his consistent attempts to move beyond the constraints of Victorian realism.
