Honors Program

Requirements for the Mathematics Honors Program

In order to graduate with honors from the Mathematics Department, a student must do all of the following in addition to satisfying the requirements for the Bachelor of Arts Degree.

Grade Point Average (GPA)

  • Achieve a GPA of 3.5 or higher in the major
  • Achieve an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher

Courses

  • Must pass at least two of the following: Math 315, Math 321, Math 331

Creative Endeavor

Participate substantially in at least two of the following:

  • A presentation at an off-campus mathematics conference
  • An on-campus mathematics presentation (the presentation cannot be part of the requirements for a course, and it must be approved by the department chair)
  • Putnam Exam
  • Mathematical Contest in Modeling
  • Off-campus mathematics internship
  • Mathematics research project
  • Some other project approved by the department chair

Department Activity

Participate substantially in at least two of the following:

  • Attend a mathematics conference
  • Serve on a Faculty Search Committee
  • Serve as a Peer Learning Associate (PLA) or Grader for at least three semesters
  • Help with Get Acquainted Day
  • Attend at least 10 mathematics colloquia
  • Other activities approved by the department chair
