Gary’s research focuses on developments in social and political philosophy after World War II and the specific challenges posed to democracy by developments in media technology and its potential to distort public opinion and political judgment.
His current research on the work of Theodor W. Adorno addresses the need to revise our most basic assumptions about freedom, rational agency and national sovereignty in the face of genocide.
The classes Gary teaches include: Persuasion, Propaganda and the Public Sphere Democracy in an Age of Mass Media; Philosophy of Law; Kant and 19th Century Philosophy; American Philosophy: From the Pilgrims to the Neo-Pragmatists; Great Philosophers: Friedrich Nietzsche; Great Philosophers: Hannah Arendt; Great Philosophers: Karl Marx; Readings: Sigmund Freud.
Gary is also currently serving as the Director of the Public Policy Program at Gettysburg College.
